Pre-runners are capable as heck, but even without their immense capabilities, they’re still a sight to behold. Any pickup can theoretically be turned into one, and when the base truck, a 1993 Ford F-150 Lighting, already looks good and gets the pre-runner treatment? It’s a match made in heaven.
Just such a vehicle is for sale right now on Bring a Trailer. To be clear, this is not an electric pickup. This is the earlier high-performance street-focused F-150 Ford Lightning. This particular 5.8-liter powered, 4-speed automatic Lightning is almost completely stock drivetrain-wise, but it received several suspension and chassis mods to turn it into a durable, hardcore off-roader. There are new control arms up front as well as new springs and shocks at every corner. There’s also a full chassis-mounted roll cage to keep the occupants safe, and a few other thoughtful mods to round out the build.
The base truck itself has 149,000 miles on it and it’s mechanically sound. Outside of the suspension mods, the pickup also has a new tubular front bumper, a tubular tailgate instead of the original, and fiberglass front fenders to account for the wider track. The bedsides have also been flared out to account for the new wider wheels and 35-inch tires, and the original fender liners have been replaced with welded aluminum ones.
The V8 is mostly untouched as mentioned and still produces 240 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. That means this Lightning isn’t the most powerful pre-runner in the world, but it’s still a V8 and it certainly isn’t an absolute dog, as you can tell in the clip below.
As of writing, the truck is hovering around $15,000 with the auction slated to end Wednesday.
