When buying a new or used vehicle from a dealership, you can expect to be offered an extended warranty or vehicle service of some kind. Besides looking at the inclusions of each plan, you will want to know who’s backing the warrant — whether it's an auto manufacturer or an independent warranty company. If it’s an independent company, then you want a provider with a long-standing experience and reputation in the industry like the Diamond Warranty Corp.

As part of Wesco Insurance Company, the Diamond Warranty Corp has been providing vehicle owners with aftermarket vehicle service contracts since 2006. The company is headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., and operates in more than 30 countries in the United States. It provides extended warranty coverage for cars, vans, work trucks, pickup trucks, and sports cars through a network of dealerships.

Warranty In-Depth

Diamond Warranty Corp has more than 10 years of experience as an extended warranty provider. Its extended warranty coverage is available to vehicles with up to 15 model years or 125,000 miles on the odometer, and begins after the manufacturer’s warranty expires. The warranty is divided into four plans: Elite Powertrain, Elite Plus, Elite Extensive, and Exclusionary (factory wrap) coverage.

Diamond Elite Powertrain Coverage

The Elite Powertrain plan begins on the first date of purchase. Depending on the class of the vehicle, the plan can be effective for three to 12 months or unlimited miles, whichever comes first. The plan covers gas or diesel engines, single turbo or supercharger, automatic and manual transmission, drive axle assembly, and transfer unit.

Fluid and filter replacements are only covered if they are part of the repairs of the covered components. It also includes 24/7 roadside assistance and towing services.

Diamond Elite Plus Coverage

Depending on the class of vehicle, the Elite Plus cover can run for three months to two years, and a maximum of 50,000 miles. On top of the parts covered in the Elite Powertrain coverage, the Elite Plus coverage also extends to the sensors, seals and gaskets, electricals, air conditioning, cooling system, ABS and brakes system, fuel delivery system, steering and suspension, and more parts of the engine, including the timing belt guide and tensioner.

It will only cover the costs of labor and diagnostics for a maximum of one hour. Rental assistance will be provided at the cost of $35 per day for a maximum of seven days in the event that the repairs for the covered components require more than 10 hours of labor time.

Diamond Elite Extensive Coverage

In addition to the parts covered in the Elite Plus coverage, the Elite Extensive or Enhanced plan also covers more parts in the sensor, engine, automatic transmission, fuel delivery system, air conditioning, heating and cooling, brakes, and steering and suspension package. It also extends to high-tech electrical systems, and a few interior and exterior components, including the headlamp switch, ignition switch, and trunk lock cylinders.

Depending on the class of vehicle, this coverage can run for 12 to 48 months, or 18,000 to 50,000 miles. It also includes 24/7 roadside assistance, towing assistance, and trip interruption reimbursement for a maximum of $200.

Exclusionary (Factory Wrap)

The exclusionary plan covers all factory-installed components, but includes a list of excluded parts in the contract. It can run for up to six years or 100,000 miles from the time the factory warranty expires. Some of the excluded components are the antennae, cables, and wiring harness.

It also includes trip interruption reimbursement for a maximum of $200 and 24/7 roadside assistance. The latter includes towing services, lockout services, delivery of fluids, jumpstart services, and flat tire replacement.

What We Like

Diamond Warranty Corp makes filing a claim as seamless as possible for its customers. You can either file the claim online by yourself or you could have your mechanic file the claim for you. The claim will be paid directly to the repair shop.

You can take your vehicle to any licensed repair shop in the country to perform the covered repairs. The Diamond Warranty Corp has partnered with repair shops in more than 30 states so you are likely to get assistance no matter where you are.

In the event of theft, repossession, or the total losses of your vehicle, the warranty can be canceled through the selling dealership. You will be refunded a prorated amount less any claim paid by the company and a $50 administration fee.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Don’t Like

Diamond Warranty Corp is not a direct seller of its extended warranty plan. It’s only available through dealerships. Also, vehicles purchased from the dealerships that aren't in partnership with the company aren’t eligible for the cover.

Additionally, key information such as the pricing or insurance costs, classes, and types of vehicles eligible for the cover is missing from the website. You have to contact the dealership to get the particulars of each plan.

Another thing we don't particularly like about Diamond Corp’s warranty plan is that it has a limited offering that doesn’t include a bumper-to-bumper cover for your vehicle. Most of its plans only cover powertrain components and basic systems. The exclusionary (factory warp) cover is the closest thing to a comprehensive cover.

Also, not all vehicles are eligible for the cover. This includes Volkswagen vehicles prior to the model year 2003, the Acura NSX, Dodge Viper, Dodge Stealth, Rolls Royce, Range Rover, Mitsubishi Evo, hybrid vehicles, and any vehicle with a twin-turbo or supercharged engine.

Common Repair Costs

Diamond Warranty Corp only covers repair costs for the parts listed in the respective vehicle service contract. Also, there’s a maximum amount that the company will pay for the repairs, which is specified in each of the contracts. For example, the costs of labor and diagnostics may be covered only for the first hour. To better understand how the company determines the costs for its contracts, it’s better to look at the general repair costs for some of the parts covered.

Here are some of the most common issues and repair costs with regular vehicles:

  • Engine and Transmission: Replacements or repairs of engine and transmission components are usually costly and can range from $200 to several thousand dollars, depending on the extent of the damage.
  • Air Conditioning: Common repair issues with AC units include a sensor or motor replacements, refrigerant leaks, or a clogged condenser. An AC compressor replacement can range from $400 to $630 while a refrigerant line replacement can cost about $600.
  • ABS and Brake System: The most common ABS problems include contaminated or malfunctioning sensors. A sensor replacement can range between $200 and $700.
  • Electrical System: Some parts of your vehicle’s electrical system are covered in the powertrain warranty. Repair issues may include a simple light switch replacement, an alternator replacement, or a motor replacement. Repair costs can range from $200 to $500.
