Since 1961, Mercury Insurance has been offering drivers — along with homeowners and businesses — affordable insurance policies that keep them and their vehicle protected on the road. But there’s a lesser-known aspect of Mercury’s coverage that can be particularly beneficial for vehicle owners: the Mercury Mechanical Protection Plan, an extended warranty just for new and pre-owned cars.

You don’t have to worry about your brand-new vehicle breaking down or needing costly repairs as soon as you’ve driven it off the lot with Mercury’s warranty. The Mercury Mechanical Protection Plan will have you covered, allowing you to extend your factory warranty for longer, equally thorough peace of mind over many miles. And it’s a great way to lower your potential out-of-pocket costs.

Uproar.car —  Around the Clock Coverage for Your Car

Uproar.car will cover your car for less, protecting you against expensive repairs from bumper to bumper. The plan even pays for itself — Uproar.car’s warranty coverage gives you exclusive access to discounts, auto concierge service, and a 100 percent online claims process. And with clear, upfront price quotes, you’ll know exactly what to expect when it comes to the cost. It should also be noted, however, that this coverage does not extend to some luxury vehicles, cars over 120,000 miles, and cars more than 10 years old.

Warranty In-Depth

Mercury Mechanical Protection makes it easy to get your vehicle repaired without spending much out of pocket, should you need any work done. Mercury's warranty coverage is offered to any drivers with cars that are still within their original factory warranty period, as well as drivers who own pre-owned vehicles. It'll have you covered for up to seven years or 100,000 miles — whichever you reach first.

The biggest benefit of Mercury's Mechanical Protection warranty coverage is how extensive it is. You'll have nearly every component of your vehicle protected, should it break. The warranty options cover virtually all mechanical and electrical parts. And should you sell your car, the warranty is transferable, a little perk that can increase your vehicle's sale value.

You can choose from four different Mercury plans, each of which offers a different level of coverage for your vehicle: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Copper.

Platinum Warranty

Mercury’s Platinum plan is the most premium option, and it offers full coverage for your car. The Platinum warranty covers just about everything that your basic factory warranty covers, as well as even more. You’ll have every system within your vehicle covered for repairs.

And the Platinum plan also covers virtually all of your car’s electrical and mechanical components. Seals and gaskets are included too. There are only a few exceptions to this warranty, but the list is pretty short — it includes items beyond basic vehicle systems, like wiper blades, non-hydraulic and non-mechanical parts, heads up displays, and internet or computer parts.

Gold Warranty

Opt for the Gold plan, and you’ll get coverage for most of your vehicle’s systems and system parts. It includes all of the coverage that lower-level plans (Silver and Bronze) cover, plus coverage for your audio system and your vehicle’s hardware. This plan also includes repairs for smaller parts and pieces like sensors, door latches and locks, and bushings and bearings.

The Gold warranty’s coverage is quite comprehensive, and one of its biggest perks is the coverage for more complex “extras.” For example, if you have automatic climate control, parts of this feature are covered. If you have remote keyless entry or an electric sunroof or moonroof, parts of these accessories are also covered. That’s an excellent perk for newer vehicles in particular.

Silver Warranty

Under Mercury’s Silver plan, you’ll enjoy protection for the following systems:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Drive axle
  • Brakes
  • Electrical
  • Air conditioning
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Fuel system

You’ll have only certain components covered, but the warranty includes most major or central parts of each of these systems.

Copper Warranty

The Copper plan is the most basic option offered by Mercury Insurance. This warranty level has you and your car covered for many common repairs, and it covers the primary parts of your engine, transmission, drive axle, brakes, electrical, and air conditioning.

Opt for the Copper plan, and you’ll have a lengthy list of vehicle components included in your coverage. It includes covered repairs for items like the alternator, starter motor and starter motor drive, master brake cylinder, parking brake pedal, release mechanism, and torque converter. However, it does not include any seals or gaskets in need of repair unless they are needed in conjunction with another repair.

Additional Coverage

Every Mercury Mechanical Protection plan, regardless of the level of coverage, includes extra coverage. You’ll get valuable roadside assistance at no additional cost, including towing, lockout services, and other spur-of-the-moment needs that come up. Tire protection is also paired with your warranty, so you can have any tires that are damaged during regular use repaired or replaced (up to a certain limit).

Mercury’s included additional coverage also extends to rental vehicles. Your warranty will pay you a rental car allowance if your car is in the shop for a covered repair. There is also trip interruption, which reimburses your food and lodging costs if you get stranded by a breakdown. The insurance deductible reimbursement that kicks in $500 towards your deductible if you file a claim is also part of this coverage.

What We Like

The option to choose your level of coverage is a great benefit of the Mercury Mechanical Protection plan. You can pick any amount that fits your needs, your concerns, or your budget, thanks to the four varied plans available. Even more importantly, no matter which plan you choose, you’ll get access to all of Mercury’s additional warranty coverage, which can be quite valuable on top of the warranty itself. The tire repair and replacement, along with roadside assistance, can pay off over time.

Another significant benefit of choosing Mercury’s Mechanical Protection warranty is the ease of repairs and service. You don’t have to wait for Mercury to approve a repair shop or even select one for you — you can take your car right to any licensed repair facility in the U.S. or Canada. And you can have the repair shop contact Mercury directly, leaving you out of the most complicated part of the repair process.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Don’t Like

You need to take proper care of your car while you’re covered under the Mercury Mechanical Protection plan because there is one important drawback: any damages or necessary repairs that are the result of normal wear and tear or the owner’s lack of maintenance won’t be covered. That means changing the oil infrequently or skipping regular tire rotations can disqualify your repairs — which means you’ll have to pay for them out of pocket.

Additionally, customer support can be a bit touch and go. Claims processing can be slow, which means your repairs are taken care of (or your funds reimbursed) at a snail’s pace, which is unpleasant if you’re dealing with significant or pricey auto work. It’s also hard to stay on top of Mercury’s customer representatives when you’re dealing with a claim.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with [company or typical] vehicles:

  • Air conditioning system repairs: Approximately $1,670 for domestic vehicles and $2,172 for European vehicles.
  • Power window motor replacement: Approximately $370 for domestic vehicles and $530 for European vehicles.
  • Brake caliper repairs: Approximately $495 for domestic vehicles and $693 for European vehicles.
  • Timing belt replacement: Approximately $1,876 for domestic vehicles and $3,770 for European vehicles.
  • Rack and pinion repairs: Approximately $1,293 for domestic vehicles and $4,218 for European vehicles.

FAQs

Separating the Mercury Mechanical Protection Plan from Mercury’s auto insurance coverage can be a little tricky. But the extended warranty offered through the Mechanical Protection Plan can be beneficial — and it doesn’t have to lock you into an expensive warranty for a long time. If you have questions, we’re answering some of the most common questions here.

Q. Can I get a refund on Mercury’s extended car warranty?

You may be able to get a refund on your warranty through Mercury when you cancel your coverage. You’ll get a full refund if you cancel within 60 days of purchase and have no claims filed. However, if you cancel after the first 60 days or have pending claims, your refund will be prorated.

Q. Does Mercury provide a good customer experience?

Mercury’s customer service and support can be lacking — but it’s kind of hard to tell. Many of the complaints customers have about the support experience are about Mercury Insurance, not specifically about the Mercury Mechanical Protection Plan. Claims processing is slow, which can frustrate warranty customers.

Q. How can I cancel my Mercury warranty?

You can call Mercury directly at 800-654-8455 to cancel your warranty.

Is Mercury’s Warranty Worth It?

Mercury’s Mechanical Protection Plan offers solid value for owners of both new and pre-owned vehicles. In addition to covering most major systems throughout your vehicle, each of the warranty options offered includes extras, like roadside assistance and trip reimbursement should you wind up stranded. And the freedom to take your vehicle to any licensed repair shop is quite a benefit. However, because the Mechanical Protection Plan is only available in 11 states, it’s pretty limited, and not all drivers can take advantage of its perks.
