Owning a Jeep can be a lot of fun, particularly if you like off-roading. They can also be extremely useful, especially if you live in a climate that gets a lot of snow in the winter. They're also a blast to drive in the summer if you enjoy riding around town in a Jeep Wrangler with the top off. They're capable vehicles that can get you from place to place quite easily in questionable weather conditions or rough terrain.

However, Jeeps can be a bit costly to keep up with their maintenance. If you want a Jeep and want to save a little money, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned (CPO) model that's backed by warranty protection.

Jeep CPO Warranty In-Depth

To qualify for CPO status, a Jeep must be sold by an authorized dealership, have less than 75,000 miles on the odometer, and cannot be older than five years. Jeep is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) that includes brands such as Dodge and RAM. The automotive group sells a variety of CPO (certified pre-owned) vehicles to consumers to provide some protection should something prematurely go wrong with the car. FCA's CPO warranty covers issues with the powertrain and problems owners may experience on other parts of the vehicle, from the electronic system to the seats.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

FCA's bumper-to-bumper warranty is called the Maximum Care Warranty and has a duration of three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. This coverage begins when the CPO vehicle is sold or tacked onto the remainder of the Jeep's Basic New Vehicle Warranty, which lasts three years or 36,000 miles.

The bumper-to-bumper warranty covers a total of 5,000 items. This includes air conditioning, brakes, engine computer, electrical systems, suspension, seats, windows, door mechanisms, and more. However, there are some exclusions: it does not cover normal wear and tear on items such as tires, brake shoes, and windshield wipers. Body and paint repairs and parts such as soft trim are also excluded. There is also a deductible for each covered repair visit.

Powertrain Coverage

The powertrain warranty lasts 100,000 miles or seven years, whichever comes first. This coverage begins on the date the vehicle is sold to its original owner. With the five-year CPO definition, at the very least those who purchase a CPO Jeep will get one to two years of powertrain coverage when they drive off the dealership lot.

Most major powertrain components are covered in this warranty, including the transmission, engine, and driveline. For example, it covers the suspension, exhaust manifolds, belts, gaskets, seals, oil and water pumps, and the cylinder head assembly. Again, there is a deductible for each covered repair visit.

Additional Coverage

When you purchase a CPO warranty from FCA, you also get roadside assistance if your vehicle unexpectedly breaks down and experiences issues such as a flat tire. You can take advantage of this service 24 hours a day, but it has a $100 cap per occurrence.

The warranty also provides rental car coverage (up to $35 per day) if your Jeep needs service for a warrantable repair. If you need a taxi or other transportation, the warranty provides a First Day Rental Allowance of $35. For even more protection, you can upgrade your warranty with the choice of three Certified Upgrade Plans in addition to the manufacturer's Complementary Mopar Vehicle Protection Plans.

Warranty Costs

When you buy a certified pre-owned Jeep model, you automatically get Jeep CPO Warranty included with your purchase thanks to FCA’s CPO warranty program. You can expect costs like a $100 deductible every time you use the warranty, but to put it’s worth into perspective, here are some of the most common issues and repair costs with Jeep vehicles:

  • Jeep Cherokee: Battery cable replacement ($255-$282)
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee: Timing chain replacement ($1,291-$1,521)
  • Jeep Wrangler: Radio antenna mast replacement ($71-$76)

What We Like

One of the best things about buying a CPO Jeep is that it must pass a 125-point inspection before it's approved for sale, so you know you're getting a used vehicle that's in good operating condition. The automaker also extends the powertrain coverage from the initial five years/60,000 miles to seven years/100,000 miles, giving you added protection should something unexpectedly happen to the engine or transmission.

Overall, the powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranties are relatively comprehensive in what they cover. If something should go wrong, there's a good chance you won't be stuck with a large repair bill. This coverage can also be transferred to another owner, which can increase the vehicle's resale value. Still, you have to pay a $150 fee to do so.

We also like the inclusion of roadside assistance as well as the rental car allowance. Certified technicians will help get you on your way, and you'll have access to alternate transportation while your Jeep is being repaired. In addition, Jeep CPO vehicles come with Carfax history reports, so you know what a previous owner did to the vehicle and what type of repairs it had. Plus, you get three free months of SiriusXM satellite radio, which is a fun bonus.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Don’t Like

The biggest problem with Jeep's CPO program is the duration of the bumper-to-bumper warranty. It is relatively short, at just three months or 3,000 miles. Once you pass this time frame, should a component fail, you will be responsible for the cost. In comparison, many other automakers provide at least one year of bumper-to-bumper protection.

Also, every time you bring your Jeep into the shop for a warrantable repair, you must pay a $100 deductible, regardless of what the problem is. While Jeep isn't unique in this practice, many comparable brands don't require deductibles at all.

Finally, a Jeep must have fewer than 75,000 miles on the odometer and be less than five years old to qualify for CPO coverage. So, if you're interested in an older Jeep model, it will not have the same protection type.

FAQs

It can be hard to decide whether you want to buy a brand-new Jeep or one that's backed by a certified pre-owned warranty. If you still have concerns about the coverage, check out some frequently asked questions below. These are topics many consumers have questions about when it comes to CPO coverage.

Q: How do I cancel Jeep’s CPO warranty?

A Jeep’s CPO warranty is part of the package when you purchase the used vehicle, just like a new car warranty is part of a new vehicle sale, so it’s not something you can cancel.

Q: Can I transfer my Jeep CPO warranty?

Yes, you can transfer the CPO warranty from your Jeep to a subsequent owner. However, you have to pay a $150 fee to do so.

Is a Warranty Policy from Jeep CPO Warranty Worth It?

The one advantage of a CPO warranty is that it gives you peace of mind. When you buy a used vehicle from a private party, you don't always know if it's dependable. Certified pre-owned Jeeps are like-new but cost much less than brand-new models. They are subjected to stringent testing before they are available for sale.

Should a part fail prematurely, there's a good chance it will be covered under the bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, so you can potentially save yourself from expensive repair costs. Perks such as roadside assistance, rental car coverage, and free satellite radio are also beneficial.

Even though the bumper-to-bumper coverage is rather short and you have to pay a deductible for covered repairs, overall, it's nice to know you have protection if you need it without paying a hefty monthly price.
