Even the most reliable vehicles experience some sort of breakdown in their lifetime, and things may get worse as your car gets older. So when your factory warranty expires, you will have to weigh the pros and cons of getting extended coverage for your vehicle over paying out-of-pocket payments in unexpected repairs. This is why there are benefits to investing in NVP's warranty, especially if your vehicle doesn't meet one of the brand-specific warranty providers' criteria.

NVP Warranty was founded in 2012 by industry professionals who were interested in offering reliable vehicle service contracts to help keep drivers safe on the roads. It covers the costs of mechanical breakdowns or repairs. But, before you invest in NVP's warranty, it's important to learn the pros and cons of the coverage so you can determine it's worth your money.

Warranty In-Depth

NVP Warranty helps you save money by covering everything from basic powertrain components to a more comprehensive bumper-to-bumper coverage, depending on the coverage level. The plan is divided into six coverage levels and is exclusively sold through a network of automotive dealerships in the United States and Canada. The plans include Powertrain, 3 Star, 4 Star, 5 Star, Exclusionary, and Wrap.

Powertrain Coverage

Basic powertrain components, including the engine, transmission, drive axle, seals, and gaskets, are under the powertrain coverage. It’s the most basic coverage offered by the company available to vehicles with a mileage of up to 225,000 miles

Other perks under the cover include 24/7 roadside assistance and car rental benefits, including reimbursements for labor and towing. You can get more on the company’s powertrain cover here.

3 Star and 4 Star

The 3 Star coverage is an advancement on the powertrain coverage offered to vehicles with up to 225,000 miles on the odometer. It covers all parts in the powertrain coverage and extends to other systems and components, including air conditioning, cooling, steering, suspension, electrical, brakes, and four-wheel drive.

The 4 Star coverage is a slight extension on the 3 Star plan and has the same odometer restrictions. On top of the parts covered in the 3 Star plan, it also covers sensors and fuel costs. Both plans include 24/7 roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement.

5 Star and Exclusionary

The 5 Star plan is the most comprehensive plan offered by the company since it’s bumper-to-bumper coverage. It’s extended to vehicles with up to 225,000 on the odometer. In addition to the parts covered in the 4 Star plan, it also covers fluid and filter replacements and all interior and exterior vehicle repairs.

The Exclusionary plan is similar to the 5 Star plan and is also a bumper-to-bumper coverage, though it only lists the parts that aren’t covered. Excluded parts include lights, batteries, safety restraint systems, cosmetic parts, and high-tech items. Additional benefits under both coverages include 24/7 roadside assistance, trip interruption coverage, and car rental reimbursement. Coverage for labor and diagnostic fees is only under the Exclusionary plan.

What We Like

While most third-party warranty providers may make you wait for up to 30 days to start the coverage, NVP’s warranty coverage begins immediately after they receive and accept your agreement with the payment.

Also, the plan’s mileage term is added to your existing miles so you can get the most out of the cover. This is distinctive since most warranty providers start counting the miles from when your odometer was at zero, which is a disadvantage for older or used vehicles.

The company also offers wear and tear coverage at an extra fee: it covers the wear and tear of components in the selected plan and is available to vehicles with a mileage of about 1,000 to 175,000 miles. It even extends to cars with an expired original factory warranty.

You get many repair facilities to choose from as NVP Warranty will authorize repairs done in more than 5,000 licensed repair facilities in the U.S. or Canada.

Feeling overwhelmed?

You aren't alone. Warranties have many benefits that aren't always clear. If you're new to the industry, check out our  Extended Warranty Guide  that helps explain some key fundamentals.

What We Don’t Like

NVP Warranty lacks personal touch with its customers; it doesn’t sell directly to customers but instead offers its plans through agents and dealerships. Also, since you can only get the plan from your local dealership when you purchase the vehicle, it doesn’t leave you much room to compare the offer with other warranty providers.

The repair process can take a bit long, especially if there are many parts to fix. This is because the repair shop has to call the dealer and seek authorization for every aspect of the repair. This back and forth can be time-consuming.

Most luxury vehicles aren’t eligible for the warranty, including Bugatti, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, Audi R and RS, Maserati, Chevrolet Corvette Z Models, Rolls Royce, Acura NSX, and Tesla vehicles.

Common Repair Costs

As we noted earlier, NVP doesn’t sell directly to its customers, so it doesn’t post the warranty prices on its website. However, the warranty prices depend on the year, make, and model of the vehicle. The same criteria are applied when determining the repair costs for each vehicle. Here are some of the most common issues and repair costs with regular vehicles:

  • Engine and transmission: Repair or replacements are estimated between $500 to $1,500 per year
  • Suspension and steering: Costs range from $500 to over a thousand dollars, including diagnosis and testing.
  • Electrical: Prices range from $200 to $500 for replacements, including labor.
  • Brakes: $500 to $1,000 depending on the part that needs to be repaired or replaced.
  • Labor: Labor costs and general diagnosis can range between $80 to $150.

FAQs

Whether you are buying a new or used vehicle, it’s natural to have a few questions about the warranty plan. Getting these answers may put you at ease about taking out an extended warranty and may make your experience at the dealership a bit smoother. Here are some answers to a few questions on NVP’s warranty plan.

Q: Can I get a refund on the NVP extended car warranty?

Yes, it's possible to get a refund from your local dealership after applying for cancellation. The refund will be issued within a given time frame, depending on how long you've had the coverage.

Q: Does NVP provide a good customer experience?

NVP Warranty doesn’t maintain a direct relationship with its customers, so the customer experience is limited to your local dealership. However, you may experience long hold times when you contact them directly, and at times, no callbacks for issues you were following up with.

Q: How can I cancel my NVP warranty?

You need to contact the dealership where you purchased the plan to apply for the cancellation. The dealership will then review your claim and offer a prorated refund while considering the length of time you've had the plan.

Is NVP’s Warranty Worth It?

There are perks to an NVP warranty, especially if you have bought a vehicle with more than 100,000 miles. Vehicles up to 175,000 miles are still eligible for the coverage. It offers six different plans with 24/7 roadside assistance for each plan. It also authorizes repairs in more than 5,000 repair shops in the U.S. and Canada, and you can choose any other licensed repair facility.

However, you can’t get an online quote as with other warranty providers, and not all types of vehicles are eligible for the cover. Despite that, NVP vehicle service contracts can provide peace of mind to both new and used car owners.
