Warranty In-Depth

When you drive off the dealership lot, you should feel confident about your new ride. That's because your vehicle is brand new and shouldn't exhibit any problems (at least for a few years). But if it does experience a defect related to materials or workmanship, the warranty will cover it.

Every new Mitsubishi comes with a five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, as well as additional coverage.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

Mitsubishi's new vehicle limited warranty is also referred to as a bumper-to-bumper warranty. If any part inside or outside of the vehicle (not including the powertrain) fails during the warranty period, the automaker will repair it or replace it at an authorized facility using new or approved remanufactured parts. The new vehicle limited warranty is transferable to a new owner.

The bumper-to-bumper warranty includes battery coverage for two years/unlimited mileage and air conditioner refrigerant charge for one year/12,000 miles. It also covers the following for three years/36,000 miles: audio units, navigation systems, and all filament bulbs. The tires are covered under a separate warranty by the tire manufacturer.

While the bumper-to-bumper warranty covers a wide range of components, there are some exclusions. It doesn't cover damage caused by the following:

  • Vehicle misuse, alteration, or accident or damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism, riots, and explosions
  • Environment influences, such as acid rain, lightning, and flooding
  • Improper vehicle maintenance
  • Normal wear and tear, including brake pads, wiper blades, batteries, and engine tune-ups

Powertrain Coverage

The powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission/transaxle, and drivetrain. This includes the balancer belt, cylinder block and cylinder head assemblies/gaskets, engine mounts, flywheel, fuel pump, intake manifold, oil pan and oil pump, water pump, timing belt, and valve covers.

It covers the torque converter, transfer case mounts, axle housing, axle shaft bearings, differential carrier assemblies, driveshaft and axle shaft assemblies, propeller shaft assemblies, and yokes, and propeller shaft center bearings. The warranty also includes a variety of internal and related parts of the engine, transmission/transaxle, and transfer case.

While the bumper-to-bumper warranty is transferable to a subsequent owner, the powertrain warranty is not. Instead, a new owner will receive powertrain coverage under the basic five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. In addition, the powertrain warranty does not apply if the vehicle is used commercially as a taxi, delivery vehicle, rental vehicle, etc.

Additional Coverage

All new Mitsubishi vehicles come with anti-corrosion perforation coverage. This coverage kicks in if the metal rusts through a metal body sheet under normal vehicle use. It has a length of five years/unlimited mileage. If the metal rusts through an outer panel, the vehicle is covered for seven years/100,000 miles.

The anti-perforation coverage does not apply if corrosion is caused by an accident, abuse, abnormal use, vehicle alteration, or improper maintenance. It does not cover surface corrosion or corrosion caused by chemicals such as acid or fertilizer.

Roadside assistance is also included in the warranty for five years/unlimited miles. Service technicians will provide jump starts, emergency fuel delivery, flat tire and lockout assistance, towing to the nearest Mitsubishi Motor dealer, and mechanical "first aid" for minor repairs.

New Mitsubishis also come with federal emission and California emission warranties.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Like

The best thing about the Mitsubishi Motors warranty is that it covers nearly all vehicle components. If there's a defect-related problem, the automaker will repair or replace the part using authorized equipment at an authorized service center. The owner is not charged for either the parts or the labor.

The length of the warranty is also impressive. The bumper-to-bumper warranty is much longer than the industry standard, which is three years/36,000 miles. And the powertrain warranty is nearly double what most manufacturers provide to their customers. This demonstrates that Mitsubishi has confidence in its vehicles and doesn't expect them to fail prematurely.

Another plus is that the new vehicle limited warranty is transferable to another owner. Should you decide to sell your Mitsubishi before the warranty expires, the subsequent owner can take advantage of its services. This can boost the vehicle's resale value.

Finally, the warranty features several years of roadside assistance. This can be very helpful if your Mitsubishi breaks down and you need help with a flat tire or other problem. And if it can't be corrected on the road, the automaker will tow it to the nearest authorized facility.

What We Don’t Like

There are not too many downsides to Mitsubishi's warranty. We already noted that the coverage is fairly comprehensive, and its duration is longer than many of its competitors. What’s not to like?

However, the warranty does have some limitations. For example, normal wear and tear is excluded. If you need new brake pads or an engine tune-up, you're responsible for the cost. Also, if you don't properly maintain the vehicle and something goes wrong, the automaker will not pay for the repairs.

The warranty will not cover damage caused by a collision, vandalism, theft, etc. And if your vehicle is caught in a flood, struck by lightning, or affected by another environmental issue, you will have to check with your insurance company if you want compensation for repairs.

Another downside is that while the bumper-to-bumper warranty is transferable to a new owner, the powertrain warranty is not. In addition, you must take your vehicle to an authorized service facility for repairs even if your local shop is more convenient.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with Mitsubishi vehicles:

  • Mitsubishi Mighty Max: Tie rod replacement ($162-$284)
  • Mitsubishi Galant: Check engine light diagnosis and testing ($88-$111)
  • Mitsubishi Galant: Coolant reservoir replacement ($105-$140)

FAQs

If you're looking for a vehicle with a comprehensive and lengthy warranty, Mitsubishi is one of the best. It provides longer coverage than many of its rivals, such as Subaru, Ford, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, most of which have 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. See some commonly-asked questions about the Mitsubishi warranty below.

Q. How long is the Mitsubishi warranty?

A. Mitsubishi’s warranty is broken down into two parts. The new vehicle limited warranty provides coverage for five years/60,000 miles, while its powertrain warranty provides coverage for 10 years/100,000 miles.

Q. What car has a 10-year warranty?

A. Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and Kia all provide 10-year warranties.

Is Mitsubishi’s Warranty Worth It?

Mitsubishi has one of the best warranties on the market. The length of its protection is longer than the industry standard, particularly its powertrain component. Even though most factory defects manifest within a couple of years of a vehicle's service life, it's nice to have the peace of mind that comes from such a lengthy warranty.

Plus, the coverage comes with roadside assistance that helps out if you're stranded during a trip, and it's transferable, which makes it more appealing to a potential owner.
