Warranty In-Depth

The Lexus extended warranty is not as simple or straightforward as others on the market. That is both a good and bad thing, as it offers you more flexibility, but it can be difficult to determine what exactly you are getting in your coverage. You can extend your warranty for as little as one year or up to five years. The mileage is unlimited, and most of your vehicle is covered. And while you can view the details of the coverage on Lexus’ website, it is subject to change based on your specific vehicle’s needs.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

Bumper-to-bumper coverage is included in Lexus’ extended warranty. This covers the vast majority of components in your vehicle that are damaged due to factory issues. This includes door handles, locks, most electrical components, brake hoses, air conditioning, heating, and other parts. Repairs or replacements needed will be done by a professional with Lexus-certified parts.

There are some exclusions. Some of the items not covered include batteries, body panels, heating hoses, light assemblies, and multiple cosmetic components like chrome, cup holders, carpet, and stitching. Normal wear and tear is also not covered. Modifications and replacements that you made yourself and resulted in damage or issue will not be repaired. However, Lexus makes a note in its extended warranty brochure information that covered components are subject to change, and it will depend upon your specific vehicle agreement. It is not stated what influences the coverage, but it is worth noting that if you decide to extend your warranty, it might not cover everything you expect.

Powertrain Coverage

The powertrain coverage is also lumped in with the bumper-to-bumper coverage. It will last for one to five years with no mileage cap. It covers various parts of the engine, including the engine block, engine mounts, engine oil reservoir, and other components. But again, if you have made engine modifications yourself with non-Lexus parts, they may be excluded.

This powertrain coverage is shorter than other competitors, as is Lexus’ limited powertrain warranty. General wear and tear, rust corrosion, negligence, and other means of damage will not be covered. But if replacements are approved and are needed, you can rest assured that they will use Lexus-certified parts by specially trained technicians.

However, this powertrain coverage is less than other competitors on the market, so it seems strange that a brand as reliable as Lexus would not offer something more comprehensive. But with most of their models being ranked as highly reliable, the extended warranty coverage offered may be considered enough to keep your vehicle lasting a long time.

Additional Coverage

Lexus does offer a detailed roadside assistance package as part of their extended warranty. Just like bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage coverage, this lasts from one to five years with unlimited mileage. This includes 24/7 roadside assistance for issues such as flat tires, battery jump starts, lockouts, and if you run out of fuel. The fuel protection will only come twice a month, but that seems very reasonable. This coverage protects you in the United States and Canada.

There is travel protection that comes with this roadside assistance, so if you are unable to drive your Lexus due to a mechanical breakdown, Lexus will offer temporary transportation and even some reimbursement. This includes up to $50 per day for a rental vehicle, public transportation, taxi service, or other substitute transportation to get you where you need to go. They will also offer up to $100 per day for a hotel and meals if you are broken down more than 150 miles away from your home. This coverage is provided for up to five days across the life of your extended warranty, which means that if you have a serious issue that leaves you far from home without a vehicle for five days, that will be the only time you can use this service during your extended warranty.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Like

There are many things to like about Lexus’ extended warranty. If you only want it extended for one or two years, that option is available, offering you more versatility for your needs. The warranty is transferable, increasing the resale value of your Lexus should you choose to part with it. The bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverages are fairly comprehensive, covering what you would expect. The no mileage cap is an excellent benefit if you choose to take your Lexus on longer trips or drive it a longer distance than average on a daily basis.

The roadside assistance is also really good. With the towing, certified repairs, and travel reimbursements offered, it is an excellent safety net for unexpected things happening when you are out and about. The fact that this coverage applies not only to anywhere in the United States but also Canada is an added perk, going further than other competitors on the market in terms of roadside assistance.

What We Don’t Like

Compared to other brands, Lexus’ extended warranty doesn’t last as long as expected. The unlimited mileage is definitely a plus, but with only extending up to five years beyond their initial four year coverage, that doesn’t protect you for very long. For example, Land Rover’s extended warranty lasts for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

There is also no extra anti-perforation coverage. Other manufacturers have factory anti-perforation coverage that lasts for up to eight years, but Lexus caps off at four years and that is all the coverage you get. The cost is also not set in stone, depending on multiple factors of your Lexus.

The main problem is there is too much left to question before officially signing up for your extended warranty and getting the paperwork. It’s much more complicated than other manufacturers’ straightforward warranties. An extended warranty for a certified new Lexus vehicle is different than if your Lexus was purchased used. Your eligibility for certain details of the extended warranty depends on what you want covered, and it is something that has to be discussed directly with a Lexus dealer.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with Lexus vehicles:

  • Lexus ES300h: Brake Pad Replacement ($335 to $385)
  • Lexus RC F: Fuel Pump Replacement ($3,763 to $3,837)
  • Lexus RC350: Radiator Replacement ($642 to $733)

FAQs

Due to the unorthodox nature of Lexus’ extended warranty, many Lexus vehicle owners wonder if it is worth the cost, particularly for such a reliable car manufacturer that has little problems. Here we compiled a few of the most commonly-asked questions concerning Lexus’ extended warranty and if it will meet your protection needs.

Q. Is a Lexus extended warranty worth it?

A. While it is a very reliable vehicle, one large malfunction could cost you lots of money. This gives you added protection from that cost.

Q. How much does a Lexus extended warranty cost?

A. It depends on the details of your vehicle and where you live, but overall you can expect to pay between $2,800 and $3,000 total for your warranty.

Q. Can I buy an extended warranty on a used Lexus?

A. Yes, if it is still under the original transferable warranty or if you bought it at a Lexus dealership.

Is Lexus’ Extended Warranty Worth It?

While not as good as other competitors’ warranties, it is overall solid coverage for a reliable car. It is flexible, depending on your needs, and covers the vast majority of your vehicle. It has excellent roadside assistance and other travel benefits. It may not be as long-lasting as you would hope, but it will give an extra boost of protection for a few more years.
