Headquartered in Detroit, Chevrolet has a proud American history dating back to 1911. Founded by one of the same individuals who created General Motors, the Chevy is iconic of the United States’ spirit. Since that time, it’s gone on to craft over 180 million automobiles. To this day, drivers continue to praise these vehicles for their reliability and performance value.

If you’ve decided to purchase a Chevy and "find new roads," the next step is to settle on a warranty. It’s no secret that, regardless of the quality of the automobile, wear and tear is an eventuality. A properly structured warranty can save you from out-of-pocket expenses down the line, provided you choose the right one. To assist, we’ve broken down all the essentials about Chevy Powertrain warranties so you can make an informed decision.

Warranty At-A-Glance

Chevy offers multiple options when it comes to extended warranties, each priced differently and offering its own set of benefits. The key is identifying where you are most likely to need repairs and choose a warranty that addresses those issues. Chevy offers several plans including:

  • Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Coverage: This plan covers most parts of the vehicle and addresses repairs resulting from defects and issues with the work done on the vehicle. It extends for a period of three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • Powertrain Coverage: Extending for a period of five years of 60,000 miles, the powertrain protection plan covers the main components of the vehicle that contribute to the movement. This includes the engine, drivetrain system, as well as transmission.
  • Hybrid & Electric Coverage: For a period of eight years of 100,000 miles, this warranty covers the cost of issues related to electric motion systems. The plans are relatively new, largely because hybrid vehicles are now becoming more prevalent.
  • Roadside Assistance: All warranties offered through Chevy come with roadside assistance budgeted into the cost, so there are no add-ons. It is meant to accommodate flat tires, battery failure, lockouts, and other emergency issues.

Pros

  • Powertrain coverage addresses the most costly repairs.
  • Includes emergency roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty.
  • Extends for a full 60,000 miles (or a period of five years).

Cons

  • Not as comprehensive as the bumper-to-bumper plan.
  • Can be voided if preventative maintenance isn’t done properly.
  • Provides no coverage for smaller, more common repairs.

Warranty In-Depth

With the ability to purchase a Chevrolet extended warranty plan straight from the dealership, it is simple to get comprehensive protection for your vehicle. Depending on your driving habits, the model of vehicle you choose, and the region in which you live, you will want to select a specific warranty. Each plan covers different parts of the vehicle for a set duration; and, pursuant to the tiers of coverage, costs more.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

The bumper-to-bumper plan is easily the most comprehensive of the Chevy warranty plans. It addresses over a thousand individual vehicle components. This plan, per the name, covers all the most important (and typically expensive-to-repair parts of the vehicle). It protects against everything the powertrain does, though also includes other parts likely to incur damage.

From the seals and gaskets to the air conditioning and heater, it is a full spectrum package. If you are concerned with the smaller parts of the vehicle — costs that add up over time — then this is a suitable plan. It extends for a period of three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Powertrain Coverage

The powertrain is a more skeleton type of protection, focused more on the essential components of the vehicle. It addresses the key parts of the Chevy required to move it forward. These include the braking system, the drivetrain, your vehicle’s transmission, as well as the engine. Since these are critical components without which the vehicle can’t function, they are also the most expensive to repair. As such, the powertrain plan can result in substantial savings.

It extends for a period of five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. As with the other Chevy warranties, it comes with emergency roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty. To access the services of this plan, it is imperative that the vehicle operator adheres to the maintenance schedule set forth in the owner’s manual.

Hybrid Coverage

As a company that offers modern mechanical advantages, Chevy factory warranties also include coverage for electric and hybrid vehicles. Though powertrain systems are the traditional method of propelling a car or truck, new technology arose for both environmental and cost-effective benefits. As such, Chevy offers optional warranties for their electric and hybrid vehicles.

The arrangements are similar to those of a standard powertrain warranty, in that they cover the parts of the car that make it move. However, since these are not the same components as in a gas or diesel-powered vehicle, the warranty is different. It extends for a period of eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever arises first. It protects you from paying for costly electrical parts that are needed to use the vehicle.

What We Like

When it comes to the Chevy powertrain warranty, there are quite a few things that we appreciate. The most noteworthy is the fact that the powertrain is perhaps the most technically essential part of the vehicle. While other plans cover the bells and whistles, too, they cost more and address parts that are not necessarily essential to the vehicle’s operation.

Since the most notoriously expensive (and necessary) parts of the vehicle to fix are in the powertrain, it is one of the best options. An added benefit is that all of the plans come with emergency roadside assistance at no added cost. It applies for the duration of the warranty, which (provided you don’t exceed the mileage restrictions) is a full five years.

The powertrain warranty is a suitable option for those who aren’t concerned with paying for smaller repairs like seals and hoses, though don’t want to pay the full amount of a new transmission. So long as the driver sticks to the maintenance schedule, it is a good plan to have.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Don’t Like

Though there are a lot of things that we do like about the powertrain warranty offered through Chevrolet, there are a few things of which we are less than fond. The first is that, despite a powertrain warranty protecting against a lot of issues, it is far from comprehensive. Unlike the bumper-to-bumper plan, it doesn’t cover some of the concerns that are more likely to arise. A broken gasket is more likely to occur within the lifetime of the warranty than a faulty engine, and a standard powertrain warranty won’t cover that.

Another issue we take with the powertrain warranty is that it can be annulled if preventative maintenance isn’t done per the schedule. Chevy provides drivers with a physical copy and online access to the maintenance schedule, though it differs for every vehicle. If even one oil change or filter maintenance is skipped, the entire warranty coverage is mitigated. As such, it is only well-suited to those who are practically able to access preventative maintenance. Since you can’t do the oil change yourself (it must be done at an approved location), this can pose a logistical issue to those in rural settings.

Common Repair Costs

Chevrolet vehicles are fairly reliable, with over a century of mechanical engineering backing the parts. However, despite good craftsmanship, all vehicles are subject to natural wear and tear — not to mention unexpected issues which often arise for drivers. Some of the most common issues and repair costs for Chevy vehicles include a failure to start and transmission pressure control issues. These are likely to fall under the powertrain warranty. Other issues include:

  • Control Arm Replacement: Approximate cost of $710 to $810
  • Blower Motor Replacement: Approximate cost of $149 to $165
  • Battery Cable Replacement: Approximate cost of $292 to $306

The approximate reported annual cost of maintaining a Chevy vehicle is $650. Naturally, the specific cost associated with keeping these vehicles in good condition depends on the mileage, shop location, model, as well as other factors.

FAQs

Selecting a warranty is a matter of cost analysis and risk assessment, with the end goal being to save money on essential repairs. The ultimate value of a Chevy CPO warranty depends on how likely you are to require covered repairs, the price of those repairs, and the cost of the warranty itself. The best way to gather the information you need is by asking questions; so, to cut through the noise, we’ve addressed the most asked questions below.

Q. Does my Chevy still have a warranty?

Check your warranty paperwork. Make sure that you are within the mileage threshold and the time restrictions. Be sure that you’ve completed preventative maintenance and have records of the same. It is prudent to review the underwriting and make sure that you have not voided the agreement.

Q. Are fuel injectors covered under Chevy powertrain warranty?

No. Per the powertrain warranty agreement, this part is not covered. Other excluded components include pressure lines, regulators, and injectors. However, larger parts like the transmission are covered by the plan.

Is Chevy’s Powertrain Warranty Worth It?

After careful consideration of the powertrain warranty offered through Chevy, we’ve determined that it is likely better to pursue more comprehensive coverage. Given the number of exceptions to the warranty, paired with the likelihood of covered parts breaking within the time allotted, it is not worth the investment. However, warranty coverage is a very useful thing to have for your vehicle. Perhaps consider the bumper-to-bumper package or getting a warranty through a third-party provider.
