Mechanical Protection Plan has been around since 1979, so it has a pretty solid track record in providing service contracts for your vehicle. Since its inception, Mechanical Protection Plan has served over five million customers and has paid out over $4 million in claims. Not bad, considering it seems to be one of the lesser-known players in the game of service contracts and extended warranties.

Here, we will do our best to weed through the noise and get to the bottom of the often confusing coverage terms and product offerings from Mechanical Protection Plan. The main limitation from MPP is that you cannot purchase a company plan directly, but must go through an approved dealer or agent.

Mechanical Protection Plan Warranty Overview

Mechanical Protection Plan is quick to point out that while its customers often refer to its coverage as an extended auto warranty, breakdown insurance, or car repair insurance, the company's coverage is actually none of those things. Instead, it's simply different vehicle service contracts in which MPP pays for covered vehicle repairs.

The company's website has a drop-down menu of different "Warranty Plans." MPP also provides adjuncts to existing warranties, such as GAP insurance, paintless dent repair, RV and motorhome coverage, maintenance programs, and more.

Here’s a look at its different coverage options:

  • Platinum Coverage. This is MPP’s main coverage for new cars. It includes various tiers that provide different options, including:
    • Platinum — This plan is MPP’s primary coverage, designed as an adjunct to your new car’s bumper-to-bumper warranty. This plan mainly covers parts and labor for mechanical and electrical components.
    • Platinum Elite — This plan further expands Platinum to include regular parts replacements, such as brake pads, fuses, battery, wiper blades, wheel alignments, etc.
    • Platinum Care — This is more of a maintenance plan covering things like tire rotation, chassis lubrication, regular oil changes and oil filter changes.
    • Platinum Care Elite — This plan is a hybrid of the Platinum Care and Platinum Elite plans, offering the best of both.
    • Platinum Luxury Plus — This plan is specifically for luxury cars and offers the same benefits as the Elite plan, plus windshield repair, paintless dent repair, tire and wheel replacement, as well as a complimentary Motor Club membership.
  • Used Car Coverage. MPP does offer extended warranties that will cover various parts and labor on previously owned vehicles:
    • Platinum Wrap — This plan is designed for vehicles with existing warranties that are still viable. It will expand your factory warranty to cover most vehicle parts.
    • Platinum — Similar to the Platinum coverage for new cars, this plan provides exclusionary coverage for most electrical and mechanical systems on your previously owned vehicle.
    • Bronze Warranty Coverage — This is for vehicles without any existing service contracts or warranties in place. It covers basic powertrain parts, including the engine, transmission, drive axles, and four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive systems.
    • Silver Warranty Coverage — Includes all the things covered in the Bronze plan plus steering, electrical, A/C, and brake system repairs.
    • Gold Warranty Coverage — Includes all the parts covered in the Bronze and Silver packages, but adds in many covered parts and systems, making it the most comprehensive of the three tiers
  • Complete Choice. Parts and service replacements for your leased vehicle.
  • MPP Care. A maintenance add-on to any MPP extended service contracts that helps pay for regular maintenance items, such as engine oil, chassis lubrication, tire rotation, and more.
  • MPP Club Plus. This option gives you paintless dent repair, windshield repair, tire or wheel road hazard coverage, 24-hour emergency roadside or vehicle lock-out assistance, key replacement, and more.
  • RV or Motorhome Coverage. MPP offers a Standard or Premier package to help cover repairs and parts replacements on your RV or motorhome.

Mechanical Protection Plan also offers various levels of lease wear coverage for leased vehicles, and theft protection should your car get stolen.

Warranty Costs

Since Mechanical Protection Plan offers coverage only through approved dealers or agents, there's no online pricing to give you an idea of what plans cost. That said, our research indicates that plan prices vary based on the make and model of your vehicle, age of and the number of miles on your car, and the amount of deductible you choose. Expect to spend between $1,000 and $3,000 on a plan from MPP.

Things We Like

There are many things we like about Mechanical Protection Plan:

  1. It’s accredited with the Better Business Bureau, so you know it has a reputation for being a reliable and dependable company.
  2. Its plans are underwritten by Old United Casualty Company, which is an AM Best A-rated insurance company with a solid track record.
  3. There are many plan options and ways to customize a plan to make it right for you.
  4. All plans come with 24-hour emergency roadside assistance.

Things We Don't Like

Now for the things we don’t necessarily like, of which there are a few:

  1. MPP doesn’t offer any online quotes or even give you an idea of what coverage will cost, making it very difficult to shop around.
  2. Plans are only available in 10 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas, making your options extremely limited.
  3. Plans must be obtained through an approved dealer or agent, so that might take MPP out of the running for you, even if you do live in one of its covered states.
  4. With so many plan options, it’s very confusing and frustrating to figure out what’s what and determine what coverage would be best for you and your vehicle situation.

FAQs

Q. Can you cancel a Mechanical Protection Plan warranty?

According to its website, you can cancel an MPP plan at any time as long as there are no claims made. If you cancel within the first 30 days of purchasing a plan, you will receive a full refund on the purchase price. After 30 days, or if there is a claim made, you will receive a refund that has been prorated minus a $50 service charge. Be careful, though, because the service charge and proration method can vary from state to state.

Q. What does a Mechanical Protection Plan warranty cover?

A Mechanical Protection Plan can cover just about anything on your vehicle. This includes basic powertrain coverage, all the way up to a very comprehensive plan that not only covers most parts of your vehicle but can also cover regular maintenance items.

Q. How much does a Mechanical Protection Plan warranty cost?

A. This is all based on various factors, like the amount of deductible you choose, age and mileage of your vehicle, your vehicle’s make and model, and your geographic location. Most plans cost between $1,000 and $3,000.

Is a Warranty from a Mechanical Protection Plan Worth It?

Based on its website's confusing layout, the fact that plans are only purchasable in 10 states, and that you must work through a dealer, we would suggest that there are other easier and less confusing options out there. However, if you live in one of the 10 covered states and are purchasing your vehicle through an approved dealer, a warranty through MPP might be the perfect choice for you.
