Warranty In-Depth

When you purchase a new Honda Civic, it comes with a new vehicle limited warranty. This includes what is commonly known as bumper-to-bumper coverage that lasts three years/36,000 miles, whichever comes first. It also includes a powertrain limited warranty that covers your vehicles for five years/60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

The basic or bumper-to-bumper coverage includes everything inside and outside the vehicle. Problems related to defects in materials or workmanship will be corrected free of charge. Whether there's an issue with the audio system, the upholstery, or other items not related to the powertrain, parts and labor are covered.

However, the bumper-to-bumper warranty will not cover repairs, failure, or damage due to vehicle misuse, abuse, acts of nature, improper installation, or improper maintenance. It does not cover problems that are caused by improper fueling, fluids not specified by Honda, or parts that are not equal to OEM materials/workmanship.

There are other exclusions as well. The warranty won't cover vehicles with altered odometers or those that have been modified with parts or accessories that are not designed to fit the vehicle's model and year or are not authorized by the automaker.

In addition, Honda Motor Company, Ltd., will not cover normal wear and tear; cleaning and polishing; broken, chipped, or scratched glass; or cosmetic flaws/damage that can occur in manufacturing or shipping. Maintenance items such as filters and brake pads are excluded. The tires are covered under a separate manufacturer warranty.

Powertrain Coverage

Like the bumper-to-bumper coverage, the powertrain warranty covers the repair or replacement of parts that are defective in materials or workmanship. There are no charges for parts or labor. The powertrain includes the engine, transmission/transaxle, and front-wheel drive system.

Items specifically covered include the cylinder block and head, timing gears and gaskets, timing chain/belt and cover, flywheel, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, intake and exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, engine/powertrain control module, water pump, fuel pump, seals, and gaskets.

The powertrain warranty also covers the torque converter, transfer case, transmission/powertrain control module, seals and gaskets, the final drive housing, driveshafts, constant velocity joints, front hubs and bearings, seals, and gaskets.

Additional Coverage

The warranty covers key fob and remote batteries and wiper blade inserts for six months. And unless they're required as part of a warranty repair, air conditioner refrigerant is covered for two years/24,000 miles, and wheel balancing and wheel alignment is covered for one year/12,000 miles.

The Honda Civic warranty also features a rust perforation limited warranty for five years with no mileage limit. This coverage only applies to the original owner and can not be transferred. The warranty does not cover situations such as surface body panel rust due to lack of maintenance or misuse or abuse.

The Honda Civic also comes with a federal emissions warranties, California emissions warranties, a hybrid powertrain warranty, a high-voltage battery capacity warranty, as well as an accessory limited warranty, a replacement/remanufactured parts limited warranty, a replacement 12-volt battery limited warranty, and a replacement exhaust components lifetime limited warranty.

In addition, Honda provides 24-hour roadside assistance if you need help with a flat tire, jump start, towing, or access to a locked vehicle. Winching and fuel delivery are also available. The automaker provides trip interruption services if your vehicle is disabled over 100 miles from home. This includes a maximum reimbursement of $300 for food, lodging, and alternative transportation, such as a rental vehicle.

Honda Roadside Assistance will help you secure a rental vehicle or taxi, make hotel reservations, obtain flight information, relay important messages, and locate services like ATMs and banks.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

What We Like

Honda's warranty is quite comprehensive, which is one of its best features. If there's a defect with the engine, suspension, electrical components, or another part of the vehicle, the automaker will repair the issue free of charge. The automaker also covers incidentals such as wiper blade inserts and key fob batteries if they fail within a short period of use.

We also like that the new vehicle limited warranty is transferable to another owner. If you decide to sell your Honda Civic within a short period of ownership, the warranty transfers to the new party. This can make the vehicle more appealing and increase its resale value compared to vehicles that don't have factory-backed warranties.

Honda Roadside Assistance is another plus. If you're stranded due to a tire blowout or a mechanical issue, certified techs will come to your aid and either help you get back on the road or tow you to the nearest authorized repair facility. The automaker also provides trip reimbursement benefits if your Civic breaks down more than 100 miles from home.

What We Don’t Like

One thing we don't like about the Honda Civic warranty is its duration. The three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty in particular is low compared to what some other automakers provide to their customers.

While Nissan and Toyota both have comparable warranty periods, automakers such as Kia have a five-year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Some automakers even provide 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage, which is significantly more than Honda’s five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. However, there is always a solution. After the manufacturer warranty expires you can always get your vehicle covered with a third-party provider warranty plan such as CarChex or some other.

And while coverage is fairly comprehensive, it's not all-inclusive. It doesn't cover acts of nature, so if you're stuck in a flood or hail storm and your Civic is damaged, you have to check with your insurance company for repair options. Also, if you decide to customize your car with aftermarket parts, they're not covered. Normal wear and tear and maintenance are also excluded.

Also, the rust perforation limited warranty does not transfer to a second owner. So, if a hole rusts through the car and you're not the original owner, you're out of luck.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with Honda vehicles:

  • Honda Civic: Spark plug replacement ($94-$160)
  • Honda CRXl: Timing belt replacement ($268-$351)
  • Honda Pilot: No start diagnosis ($88-$111)

FAQs

Automakers include warranties with their vehicles to promote consumer confidence. They also want to protect their customers in case a part fails prematurely. If you're in the market for a new Honda Civic, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the warranty. That way you will know what it includes (and what it doesn't) should you experience any problems.

Q. What does the Honda warranty cover?

A. Honda's basic warranty covers most components that are defective in materials or workmanship. The automaker provides repairs free of charge.

Q. What is not covered by the Honda warranty?

A. The Honda warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, maintenance, aftermarket parts, and vehicle misuse/abuse, among other things.

Is the Honda Civic Warranty Worth It?

Even though the basic warranty coverage for a Honda Civic is rather short, it should be enough to protect you from most problems (and most expenses). That's because vehicle defects often surface within the first couple of years of a car's service life.

While there are better warranties available from other manufacturers, If you have your heart set on a new Civic, don't let a few downsides deter you.
