Warranty In-Depth

The Land Rover extended warranty increases the coverage of your car from four years or 50,000 miles to 10 years or 100,000 miles. Just like the limited warranty, the bumper-to-bumper coverage and powertrain coverage are lumped into one. It has a comprehensive roadside assistance package. Overall, it covers everything you would expect it to, but with some exclusions.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

This coverage encompasses nearly everything on your vehicle, inside and out, front to back. It lasts for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. This covers any workmanship issues, defective materials from the factory, some consequential failures, and mechanical and electrical failures related to issues during the manufacturing process. You can also take advantage of unlimited claim liability and MOT insurance, which covers repair and replacement costs for a large variety of car components.

There are a handful of things that are not covered. Normal wear and tear, cosmetic issues, and routine maintenance are not covered under this extended warranty. Issues from modifications you’ve made on your own are not covered, which makes perfect sense. Damage that results from you not properly caring for your vehicle is also not covered. Also, if you use non-Land Rover parts and they become damaged or fail, the extended warranty will not cover them.

Powertrain Coverage

The bumper-to-bumper coverage and powertrain coverage are lumped into one. Powertrain refers to the critical part of the car consisting of the engine, transmission/transaxle, and drivetrain. It, too, is covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. This is excellent because it will virtually last the life of your vehicle. It covers issues on the powertrain due to workmanship, materials, mechanical failures, and electrical issues that are a result of the manufacturing process. MOT insurance will likely not be applicable here since it mostly covers steering, lamps, seat belts, and similar components of your car.

The exclusions for the powertrain will mostly come from modifications or repairs you’ve made yourself. If you do an improper job or there is a failure, Land Rover’s extended warranty will not cover this modified engine. If you don’t keep up with routine maintenance on your vehicle, then Land Rover also will not cover issues with your powertrain. If you replace or modify any part of the powertrain with non-Land Rover components, then that also will be excluded. This does make sense and seems fair to be excluded.

Additional Coverage

Land Rover’s extended warranty offers roadside assistance. Just like its standard limited warranty, this is a 24-hour toll-free hotline that will help you anywhere in the United States. This includes help with flat tires, fuel delivery, jump starts, and similar issues. You get free towing to the nearest Land Rover retailer or one within 50 miles of the closet retailer. A Land Rover technician will come to assist you and will have access to any parts you need. It also offers a trip reimbursement feature if your vehicle breaks down more than 50 miles away from your home.

You can be reimbursed for a car rental if your Land Rover is being repaired. This is even included outside the United States, which is an excellent feature.

However, your car will only be serviced by a Land Rover technician if you are a reasonable distance from one. This could result in you needing to tow your car, but you will get reimbursed for these expenses since a technician could not reach you.

You aren't alone. Warranties have many benefits that aren't always clear. If you're new to the industry, check out our Factory Warranty Guide that helps explain some key fundamentals.

What We Like

There is a great deal to like about this extended warranty. The long life keeps you secure and covered for the majority of the time you will own your vehicle. The warranty is transferable should you choose to part with your Land Rover, which increases its resale value.

This is a good, solid coverage that keeps all the essentials under warranty. The small bit of international coverage is excellent as well. The roadside assistance for 10 years gives you added peace of mind. Whether or not a Land Rover technician is personally coming to you or you have to get to the retailer yourself, Land Rover still has your back and could reimburse you. The MOT insurance feature provides you with added coverage for a variety of vehicle components.

The majority of what could go wrong with your vehicle, given you take good care of it, is covered with this extended warranty.

What We Don’t Like

A big drawback is that you can only purchase this extended warranty when the original is still in effect. This means you must make up your mind within those first four years or you will miss out.

Land Rover will not cover modifications made that are not with their specific parts, or that don’t fall under what they considered “limited modifications.” This does put a cap on personalizing your vehicle if you want all of it to stay under warranty. So if you choose to add new parts or replace parts on your own, you must be certain they are original Land Rover parts.

The roadside assistance technician is a great feature, but there are limits. You must be within a certain distance from a Land Rover retailer for this to be applicable. While they will offer you reimbursement for a tow to their retailer, that still gives you an inconvenience of having to wait for and pay for a tow.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with Land Rover vehicles:

  • Land Rover Range Rover Sport SE: Brake Pad Replacement ($681 to $725)
  • Land Rover Discovery: Primary Water Pump Replacement ($1,021 to $1,112)
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport: Fuel Pump Replacement ($1,254 to $1,291)

FAQs

The Land Rover extended warranty is comprehensive and comes with various exclusions and specifications. This can leave you wondering if your specific instance is covered, or some details about the extended warranty itself. Here, we have included a few common concerns vehicle owners have before or after purchasing their new Land Rover.

Q. How much does a Land Rover extended warranty cost?

A. It depends on the price of the model, but you should be looking at around $6,000 for the entire coverage.

Q. Can I buy a Land Rover extended warranty?

A. Yes, but only if your vehicle is still under the original limited warranty.

Q.What does a Land Rover extended warranty not cover?

A. In summary, it doesn’t cover general wear and tear, issues caused by negligence, or non-Land Rover modifications and replacements.

Is Land Rover’s Extended Warranty Worth It?

This is a solid extended warranty that lasts for an exceptional amount of time and covers most things that could go wrong. With its comprehensive roadside assistance and transferable warranty feature, this extended coverage is worth the extra cost. However, if you intend to make extensive personal modifications to your new Land Rover, you may find it not worth the money.
