Warranty In-Depth

Land Rover’s limited warranty lumps both the bumper-to-bumper coverage and powertrain coverage into one, which is odd compared to other manufacturers on the market. Its 4-year or 50,000-mile warranty covers both, as well as various issues that could occur. It has comprehensive roadside assistance, but various other issues are excluded.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

Land Rover’s bumper-to-bumper coverage lasts for four years, or up to 50,000 miles. It covers the entire vehicle, inside and out, for all issues related to problems with the workmanship. So if the window doesn’t roll up properly, the locks get stuck, or you have issues with the electronics, all of that should fall under Land Rover’s bumper-to-bumper coverage. It also covers issues from bad materials, but for a brand that calls itself a luxury SUV, you would expect high-quality materials to be utilized.

It does not, however, cover standard wear and tear and replacing items such as wiper blades, brake pads, and oil filters. It does not cover environmental damage or UV damage as well as cosmetic issues and door dings. It also does not cover damage to tires at all. But if your tires are damaged from an issue with the workmanship, then the tire manufacturer will cover them.

Powertrain Coverage

Unlike other manufacturers, Land Rover lumps bumper-to-bumper coverage and powertrain coverage together. It will last the same length of time, which is four years or 50,000 miles. The powertrain refers to the engine, transmission/transaxle, and drivetrain. Just like the bumper-to-bumper coverage, Land Rover’s warranty for the powertrain encompasses workmanship and material issues, but not general wear and tear.

It is a rather strange move to lump powertrain and bumper-to-bumper coverages together. Most manufacturers offer a longer powertrain coverage, typically six years or 70,000 miles. These are very essential components to the car, so if there is a sudden issue within a mere five years of owning the vehicle, you will be liable for what could amount to extremely expensive repairs.

That being said, bumper-to-bumper coverage for other cars on the market is shorter. Land Rover essentially gives you an extra year, or about 14,000 miles, more than its competitors. That could be the strategy behind lumping both of these coverages together. You get longer with one and shorter with another.

Additional Coverage

Land Rover offers a very comprehensive roadside assistance warranty. Vehicle owners will have access to a 24-hour toll-free hotline for anywhere in the United States. This will give you general roadside assistance like replacing flat tires, fuel delivery, battery jump, keys locked in your car, and other similar emergencies. It also offers free emergency towing to the nearest Land Rover retailer or one within 50 miles of the closest retailer. One of the best parts of this is that, for your emergencies, an outfitted Land Rover technician and vehicle will arrive to help you. You can be assured they will have exactly what you need.

An extremely good aspect of this roadside assistance is Trip-Interruption Expense Benefits. This offers you reimbursement for trip expenses if a warranty-related issue occurs that interrupts your trip, so long as you are over 50 miles from your home.

Land Rover also supplies a 6-year and unlimited mileage corrosion perforation warranty. It also offers various emissions warranties to protect you regarding EPA regulations. Most of these emissions-related components are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles

Feeling overwhelmed?

You aren't alone. Warranties have many benefits that aren't always clear. If you're new to the industry, check out our Factory Warranty Guide that helps explain some key fundamentals.

What We Like

There are plenty of things to like about Land Rover’s standard limited warranty. The bumper-to-bumper coverage lasts longer than other competitors, giving you added peace of mind for any manufacturing-related issues that could arise. The warranty is also transferable to a new vehicle owner, which keeps the resale value up should you want to part with your Land Rover.

The roadside assistance package is excellent, giving you access to a multitude of benefits while you are out on trips. As a luxury SUV, most people buy a Land Rover to travel, go off-road, and enjoy the country. The fuel delivery is really nice if you find yourself out exploring and unable to locate a gas station in time. The addition of trip reimbursement, within a reasonable amount of money, is another excellent benefit for a vacation that gets interrupted due to vehicle issues. When this warranty ends and you no longer have access to roadside assistance, it will be sorely missed.

What We Don’t Like

There are some places where Land Rover could have improved the warranty. The powertrain coverage being shorter than others on the market seems like a very odd choice for such a critical part of the car. Of course, you can always purchase their extended warranty to get a longer coverage, but when similar vehicles from other manufacturers offer a longer powertrain warranty as standard, it makes you wonder why Land Rover went in this direction.

Having to rely on the tires’ manufacturer for their specific warranty throws in a bit of an extra complication if you have tire issues, particularly for tires that come standard with the purchase of a Land Rover. Overall, for such a big name as Land Rover, you expect a bit more for your money. It covers all of the basics, but it does not really go above and beyond to set it apart from its competitors.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with Land Rover vehicles:

  • Land Rover Discovery: Brake Pad Replacement ($681 to $725)
  • Land Rover Range Rover: Timing Belt Replacement ($1,072 to $1,262)
  • Land Rover Range Rover Sport SE: Spark Plug Replacement ($309 to $437)

FAQs

When evaluating your Land Rover’s warranty and what may or may not be covered, there are some common questions new vehicle owners have. We have broken down a few of the most common issues regarding the coverage to help you determine what falls under the warranty, and if you feel this warranty is a good value for this vehicle.

Q. Are brakes covered under Land Rover’s warranty?

A. The brake system is covered for defects in workmanship and materials. However, the brake pads and rotor wear are not.

Q. Does Land Rover offer extended warranty coverage?

A. Yes, but you must contact a dealer for those details. It seems to extend coverage for seven years or 100,000 miles.

Q. Does the Land Rover warranty cover maintenance?

A. No, routine maintenance is not covered. But they do offer a prepaid scheduled maintenance plan if you are willing to spend the extra money.

Is Land Rover’s Warranty Worth It?

Overall, Land Rover offers a solid warranty that covers all of your basics for about the right length of time that things tend to go wrong in a vehicle. They have good roadside assistance and longer bumper-to-bumper than standard. But the powertrain warranty is shorter than standard, and you don’t get much extra than the average manufacturer.
