Being a parent is a hugely rewarding and educational experience. Just one of the many things I learned early on was how nice it is to carry a bag around with all your stuff. You start out with diapers, wipes, extra clothes, toys, and snacks. Even once your kid is out of diapers, you’re still carrying the thing, except now the contents are half yours. Maybe more than half because my snacks are bigger. This is what changed my idea of what EDC meant. It shouldn’t be about having stuff that you might, someday, maybe will need in the worst of situations. It’s about carrying stuff you know you will need all the time. These EDC deals are in spirit of that.

I have multiple sling bags and backpacks of different sizes. I have an older model similar to this Oakley Seeker EDC bag for $111.05 that has been with me around the world several times over. Also, I have a bag from Tumi similar to this Compact EDC sling for $275.00 that was a gift. Honestly, I love Tumi and it lasts, forever, but at full price I usually can’t justify the spend.

I do sometimes have a multi-tool with me. But, I have forgotten to take them out in the past and have been forced to gift them to the TSA. Besides, I hardly ever use a multi-tool and I’ve been carrying one since I was a teenager. It is way more likely I will need a flashlight like this Streamlight Wedge for $111.20. Again, this is a more premium choice. Still, I like the rectangular shape that won’t roll away and is less bulky. But I also have something very similar to this Nebo Big Larry for $25.99 that I was given at a press event. It is probably the most useful light I’ve ever owned.

The items below are things I’ve found to be invaluable regularly. I use a good set of scissors far more often than I need a knife. From cutting open plastic packages, or even cutting copper wire, these are utilitarian. Do I even need to tell you how useful even the most basic first aid kit can be? I have a larger kit in my car, but something like this fits in my bag. My iPhone decides to chew through power at record pace when it knows it’s the least opportune time, I like having a small power bank for those situations. Lastly, I find myself measuring things all the time. I have yet to get the Adam Savage forearm measuring scale tattoo myself, so having a multi-gauge with me is hugely useful when I need to figure out what fasteners I need or the thickness of a material I’m using.
