Tesla Model 3 Won’t Have an Instrument Panel, Elon Musk Confirms

No HUD or instrument binnacle here, folks. Just a big old center console with your speed on it.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Elon Musk, CEO and founder of Tesla, confirmed that the upcoming Model 3 will feature a single center display for all its data—no heads-up display, no standard instrument placement. Replacing the buttons, knobs, switches, and standard instrument binnacle that most cars feature, the single center display—which resembles a massive iPad—will be the car's central command system, showing road speed, energy usage, climate control settings, etc.

Replying to a series of questions surrounding what the interior displays of the entry-level Tesla will be like over Twitter, Musk said that the Model 3 will neither have a central gauge cluster nor a heads-up display. "You won't care," he wrote to a user pining for a centrally-mounted speedometer.

Some photos of the Model 3's interior have been circulating recently; in them, the center display strongly dominates the car's interior space, which may raise some eyebrows from automotive traditionalists. But given how prescient Musk has been about consumers' tastes, who knows? Centrally-mounted gauges may be soon be a thing of the past.
