Commuting In An Old Aircooled Porsche
This morning on my way out the door, I decided to pick up the 912E keys. It was the right decision.
It's a tough decision to make sometimes, depending on the weather, but every morning I am given the choice between taking the Audi to work or grabbing the keys to the 912E. This morning on my way out the door, I decided to pick up the Porsche keys. It was the right decision. Despite the fact that it was about 30 degrees this morning and the 912 doesn't have heat. Despite the fact that the Porsche's right front caliper doesn't like to retract its piston all the time and creates a steering wheel shimmy at highway speeds. Despite the fact that the driver's seat is one of the least comfortable places to be for long periods of time due to the seat bottom foam that has deflated like a flan left out for too long. Despite the fact that the headlights are awful, the stereo barely works, and the muffler has a loose baffle. Despite the fact that this car has nearly 200,000 miles on it, and I still beat it like a rented mule, I chose it and will continue to choose it whenever I can.
I never would have thought that a car that ambles from 0-60 in just over 13 seconds could be this fun and exciting to drive. I am rarely in a hurry, and I appreciate this terrible old car for what it is. Besides, who doesn't love a Talbot Yellow G-series fender just barely peeking into view at the bottom of your periphery? Those signature spindly windshield wipers sitting akimbo on the screen. Visibility in this car is great, even with just a driver's side mirror. It's not perfect, but it's mine. Drive your classics, they deserve it, and so do you!
