Mercedes Benz is rumored to introduce a new sedan variant of its A-Class lineup within the next two years. Autocar reported that we may see these fresh models pop into showrooms by the end of 2018, allowing for plenty of time to develop it alongside the next-generation A-Class hatchback that’s slated to release around the same time.

We imagine that the new sedan model will be diversified in terms of equipment and powertrain options. It would be reasonable to expect a host of engine choices including gas, diesel, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. The A-Class sedan will compete in a particularly stingy category when it comes to efficiency, so Mercedes will have to think of inventive ways to make this a segment-topping performer. It will ride upon the MFA platform currently used in the B-Class, CLA, and GLA models, offering front wheel drive and all wheel drive options.

This should make for a real competition to the Audi A3. The two German competitors are sure to implement all of their latest tech into these two models, promising a good comparison between the two sedans. Mercedes Benz and Audi are seemingly always developing innovative driver aids with both companies leading the way in this field, along with the all-electric American automaker that they’d like to forget about. By the time the A-Class sedan swings around, we should  see a large advancement in V2V communication — a technology that these two rivals harp a lot of focus on.

We haven’t heard any for-sure news from Mercedes themselves, but hearsay indicates that it may come soon. This adds a bit of spice to the small luxury sedan category, continuing on with the German theme that’s already dominant there. A plethora of intelligent technology should force all of the manufacturers to keep developing and working on smart new models. We’ll continue to report on this news once more is released.
