Started in 1996, Toyota’s Certified Used Vehicle program (TCUV) offers potential car owners a way to save some money with a used Toyota vehicle with some extra protection and assurances of quality.

The company has a reputation of making quality vehicles, many with great resale value, that can run for hundreds of thousands of miles, but even Toyota seems to recognize the value of a warranty on a car that has been around the block a few times since its model year.

Warranty In-Depth

Toyota’s CPO program is fairly standard in its offerings and coverage. Its 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and seven-year or 100,000-limited powertrain warranties are the same as other major manufacturers like Ford and Honda. As a result, the warranties are competitive to most other brands, making the choice of whether to buy a Toyota certified pre-owned vehicle comes down to whether you like the brand and models of the line and don’t want to buy a new car instead.

Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty

The basic comprehensive warranty coverage lasts for 12 months or 12,000 miles and includes any repairs or replacements needed due to material and workmanship defects. In other words, if Toyota screwed up when building or repairing the vehicle, the warranty will cover the necessary repairs. It’s important to realize that, like most Toyota bumper-to-bumper warranties on new vehicles, this limited comprehensive warranty doesn’t cover general wear-and-tear or regular maintenance costs.

Powertrain Warranty

The 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty lasts for seven years and covers almost all of the primary drivetrain components (minus components in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles). Major engine and transmission components, in addition to any internally lubricated parts, are all covered for repairs or the replacement of components if issues arise.

During repairs, the warranty provides a substitute vehicle reimbursement to cover expenses with a rental. The warranty also packages some basic travel protection that will reimburse lodging and meal expenses on trips 150 miles or greater from home.

CPO vehicles tend to be in good condition, most often better than general used vehicles.

Feeling overwhelmed?

You aren't alone. Warranties have many benefits that aren't always clear. If you're new to the industry, check out our Factory Warranty Guide that helps explain some key fundamentals.

What We Like

Toyota does a good job of keeping you covered when roadside emergencies happen. Common issues like breakdowns, flat tires, and other problems that can leave you stranded on the side of the road are mitigated by the CPO warranty’s roadside assistance program. Starting from the date of the vehicle’s purchase, the roadside assistance program lasts for one year and covers typical services like a lockout, flat tire, jump starts, towing, and fuel delivery.

Within that year, the service is available 24/7.

The inclusion of travel and substitute vehicle coverage is also a nice perk of the powertrain warranty. Essentially, if unexpected issues arise while on a trip (at least 150 miles away from home) or just during the daily grind, Toyota will reimburse expenses related to hotels, meals, or rentals. In combination with the roadside assistance, Toyota leaves little up to chance when it comes to roadside emergencies.

Given Toyota’s history with hybrid technology, it’s no surprise that the company has extended its CPO program to include hybrid and fuel cell drivetrains. Both warranties last for eight years or 100,000 miles and cover important components like batteries, control modules, power units, and air compressors.

These may be limited, however, to specific Toyota dealerships that are equipped to handle repairs and placements of these technologies.

What We Don’t Like

There isn’t too much to dislike about Toyota’s CPO program, but it’s slightly lax when it comes to the selection criteria for what vehicles get covered. Compared to other CPO programs, you may find older vehicles in Toyota’s CPO inventory, which may be an important consideration if you are looking for something slightly used.

To make it into the CPO program, vehicles have to be under seven years of age and 85,000 miles on the engine. This limitation is slightly above the average of other CPO programs that tend to use a six-year or 80,000-mile cutoff limit. The seven-year range means you may find vehicles from previous generations of the company’s popular vehicle lines.

The company also uses a lower minimum inspection process compared to competitors. While many companies use 174 points of inspection to vet the vehicles that get into their CPO programs, Toyota has a minimum inspection of 160 points. This can extend up to 174 points, but this varies from dealership to dealership depending on individual choice and how the dealership is equipped to handle the inspection.

Common Repair Costs

Some of the most common issues and repair costs with Toyota vehicles:

  • Toyota Echo: Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement ($495-$746)
  • Toyota Land: Cruiser HVAC Electronic Control Module Replacement ($567-$575)
  • Toyota RAV4: Engine Oil Cooler Replacement ($1,015-$1,061)
  • Toyota Yaris: Cylinder Head Replacement ($2,606-$3,036)

FAQs

Q. Does the CPO warranty cover battery issues?

A. There are specific battery warranties for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Q. Do I really need a warranty for a used certified Toyota?

A. You may not actually use it, but since a true Toyota CPO vehicle automatically comes with the CPO warranty, it doesn’t harm anything.

Q. My Toyota is over the CPO age or mileage limits, can I still get warranty coverage?

A. You can elect to get anextended warranty to cover some repair costs. Third-party providers are the best source to check out for this type of warranty.

Is Toyota’s CPO Warranty Worth It?

Since all Toyota-certified used vehicles come with the CPO warranty, its worth ultimately depends on whether you want to buy a certified Toyota used the car through its program. Keep in mind, not all used Toyotas come with the CPO warranty (unless it had one from a previously used sale), and not all used vehicles sold at a Toyota dealership go through the certification program.

Instead, only vehicles with the certification label will offer the CPO warranty.

With that said, the CPO warranty does offer a lot of value if you want to avoid the risk of costly repairs due to defects exposed during normal use. It also adds a certain peace of mind to buy a used car that you can’t really get otherwise. If you are looking for a way to save some money with a used vehicle without the usual risks of buying a lemon, Toyota’s CPO program and warranty coverage may be the best solution.
