It seems that nowadays everybody is getting into the car-sharing business. I suppose it makes a lot of sense for auto manufacturers as demand shifts from individual car ownership to shared networks. By having a car-sharing service, car companies can make sure they don’t miss out on all that business as people continue to choose car-sharing over car-buying.

Nissan is the latest to enter the fray, announcing “e-share mobi” in Japan. The service will kick off January 15, 2018, featuring the Nissan Leaf and the Nissan Note e-Power. Users will be able to experience Nissan’s current autonomous driving technology and its electric drive systems. The program is set to start with about 30 stations in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Shiga, Nara, Wakayama and other prefectures in Japan.

The new service uses a mobile app engineered by Smart Oasis Carsharing and launches with zero monthly fees. There’s also no additional distance-based fee. Nissan is hoping this will lead customers to register without having to worry about how often they’ll actually use the service. Compare this to Zipcar where you have to pay $7 a month here in the US regardless of whether you use their service or not. There's no word on the detailed fee structure once you rent out a car, however.

Each of the cars will come equipped with Nissan’s ProPilot autonomous driving tech and Around View Monitor. They also will have a drive recorder, a small black box device to help gather data in case of an accident. The cars also come with an integrated ETC card to pay for highway tolls, which Nissan tacks onto your bill with zero markup. Users can also take advantage of a service similar to GM's OnStar where they can get help with navigation and recommended travel routes from a live operator.

Nissan opened up the service for registration last Friday, December 8. Japanese users can sign up at https://e-sharemobi.com/. The news comes on the heels of Nissan’s plans for a ride-sharing pilot next year.
