According to Lamborghini, the new Huracán LP 580-2 was “created to give its driver a pure 'fun to drive' experience." It’s a rear-wheel drive version of the entry-level, a $200k hooning special that speaks directly to the [brand’s core identity](<https://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/976/lamborghini-made-the-hurac-n-worse-to-make-it-better>). And, last week, *The Drive* had a chance to [test the 580-2](<https://www.thedrive.com/supercars/1275/the-rear-wheel-drive-lamborghini-hurac-n-does-wonderful-things-with-less>) at Losail International Circuit in Qatar. Verdict? More engagement, more everyday usability, more fun for fun’s sake, and a four-tire-a-day smoking habit. In other words: Glorious.

As its name suggests, the LP 580-2 produces 580 horsepower, down 30 ponies down on the regular [Huracán LP 610-4](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/389/driving-and-eating-with-chef-michael-white-in-a-lamborghini-hurac-n>). However, the 580-2 more than makes up for it by shedding 72 pounds from the standard model, bringing the curb weight to a tidy 3,062 lbs. The new rear-wheel-drive layout is complemented by a stiffer suspension setup and tweaked steering. Also, re-tuned traction and stability control systems, which make the car more exciting at the limit.

That’s definitely evident in [this video](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqrdnTW72rM>), which showcases the Lamborghini doing all the goofy sideways stuff you want it to. (Read: roaring V-10, sensational amounts of opposite lock, copious tire smoke). And you might recognize the Italian racetrack where it all takes place, too: That’s Imola, erstwhile home of the legendary Formula 1 San Marino Grand Prix. It’s the right venue for gross displays of ten-cylinder firepower.

In a supercar world that's so often measured in [Nürburgring lap times](<https://www.thedrive.com/supercars/920/the-pagani-zonda-did-not-just-lap-the-n-rburgring-in-6-30>), 0-60-mph times and top speeds, it's refreshing to see Lamborghini embrace the old-fashioned silliness of a powerful, rear-wheel-drive machine.
