Are Two NFL Stars Betting Six-Figure Cars on Total Receiving Yards?
A Rolls-Royce Wraith and a Porsche 911 GT3 are on the line. But is the wager real?
Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers’ Antonio Brown ranked second in the NFL among all wide receivers, with a total of 1,834 yards. New York Jets’ Brandon Marshall clocked in fourth, with 1,502. Analyze data for the past three years, and Brown’s still in the lead with an average of 125 receptions and 1,677 yards, while Marshall averaged 90 catches and 1,173 yards. But Marshall thinks he’ll wallop Brown this season and is willing to bet a Porsche 911 GT3.
In July, right when training camps kicked off, Brown debuted a new, completely ridiculous custom Rolls-Royce Wraith, festooned in the Steelers colors and adorned with their logo stars and a full starry night. It’s, uh, absurdly over the top. Judge for yourself below.
Marshall caught some of Brown’s posts on social media and fired back on his own Instagram page. In a video from early this summer, Marshall stands in front of a Porsche 911 GT3, with two Jets green stripes, points at it and addresses Brown, stating, "If you have more receiving yards than me, I'll give you the Porsche. If I have more receiving yards than you, you've got to give me the Rolls-Royce."
However, more than a few questions have been raised as to whether the Porsche actually belongs to Marshall. For starters, Porsche is an official sponsor of the Jets. The announcement video seems to feature that very Porsche. Secondly, it’s parked on a platform, like a display car, directly in front of the Jets training center. Even Brown doesn’t believe it’s Marshall’s car.
Contacted by TMZ, Brown told the gossip rag Marshall wasn’t serious, adding, “he don’t really wanna do that. He just wants some PR. He too old to be doing that. The RR is about $100k up [in value over the Porsche.] If he really serious, CALL ME … I’ll gladly accept. Don’t Internet it.”
According to Marshall, he did just that. Marshall told TMZ he and Brown spoke “to work out the details of this deal. We’ll let you guys know what happens.” So what happened? We called Marshall’s rep to see what is the status of the wager, but no one’s gotten back to us yet. Heading into week eight, Brown’s in eighth place, having already notched 592 receiving yards, while Marshall’s down in 18th place, only having accrued 472. If the bet is real, Julio Jones should get in on the action, considering he’s leading with 830 yards.
