The mid-size sedan category is a tough one to manage. Major competitors in the form of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord make it interesting while trying to keep up with sheer volume, and with the 2018 Legacy, Subaru hopes to do exactly that. The model is set to receive a host of upgrades from chassis dynamics to creature comforts, aiming to maintain Subaru's place in the crowd.

Visually, the 2018 Legacy is subtle yet handsome. It's lines are slightly bolder than before while still keeping a reserved appearance. Noticeable changes include the revised headlight design and wheel choices, making the next generation Legacy appear sporty and quick. Two new colors will also be available -- Magnetite Gray Metallic and Crimson Red Pearl. Subaru is aiming to broaden the demographic with this rejuvenated exterior, pleasing the everyday commuter and sport-focused driver.

To keep the experience enjoyable, the next Legacy will feature a variety of performance tweaks. Its competitors aren't necessarily oriented on speed, but they do offer go-fast options in the form of big V6s. In order to do their fair share, Subaru institutes the familiar 3.6L flat six to the Legacy once more. A 2.5L flat four will also be offered with an improved CVT gearbox. Chassis upgrades have been made as well to bring the Legacy up to par.

Interior amenities are also rethought for the 2018 model year. The sporty theme carries on throughout the cabin with a redesigned center stack and steering wheel. Material quality is also said to be improved on, upping the Legacy's class in that department. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay give the driver and passengers access to their favorite smartphone apps in a way that is less distracting and dangerous while keeping things fun.

Safety will of course be at the top of Subaru's priority list as well. A new optional technology named Steering Responsive Headlights, or SRH, will adjust the Legacy's headlamps based on steering input, illuminating key sections of the road when turning. This, along with the new infotainment capabilities, will help keep drivers on the road with optimized accessibility and precision.

More details will follow once the 2018 Legacy makes its official debut. The Chicago Auto Show starts February 11th, so expect to learn a lot about the vehicle around that same time.
