Americans looking for rental getaways overwhelmingly prefer Australia. Melbourne, Australia, was the top choice for vacation rentals in 2017, according to an analysis of trips booked through Expedia, the travel-service site said Wednesday in a news release.

In fact, of the top five destinations for vacation rentals, Australia, an English-speaking continent, country and island in Oceania, claimed all but one spot.

Melbourne was followed by Gold Coast, Australia, for the second most-preferred location to rent, followed by Orlando, Florida; Sydney, Australia; and Brisbane, Australia.

Cancun was the most booked international destination, according to the analysis based on data from January through the middle of November. London ranked second, followed by Mexico City, while Paris and Guadalajara were newcomers to top five, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

The most-booked destination in the U.S. in 2017 was New York, followed by Los Angeles, Orlando, Las Vegas and Chicago.

The average hotel stay in 2017 was two nights, with travelers looking for savings and centrally-located places to stay that put them near tourist attractions.

Overall, Circus Circus Hotel, Casino & Theme Park in Las Vegas was the most in-demand hotel, while The Belvedere Hotel in New York was the most in-demand in the boutique category.
