Hooray Beer. Anheuser-Busch Orders 40 Tesla Semi Trucks
The company wants to help reduce its carbon footprint.
There’s really only one thing that could make Tesla’s new truck cooler than it already is. No, it’s not autonomous driving technology, longer range or quicker charging. It’s something far more basic than that. It’s…beer. Well according to CNBC, Anheuser-Busch just made the Tesla truck that much cooler after ordering up 40 of the new trucks.
The order from the American segment of global beer conglomerate AB InBev is one of several Tesla has received since unveiling the truck last month. Other recent notable orders include a deal for Walmart to take delivery of 15 of the semis. As of Tuesday, preorders for the electric semi had reached 200 from several companies. However, the companies won’t see the new trucks until at least 2019.
Ordering up the trucks is a step towards helping Anheuser-Busch reduce its carbon footprint. The trucks would help deliver products from Anheuser-Busch’s breweries to its local distributors. Most of these drives are only a couple of hundred miles, well within the truck’s advertised 500-mile range. Using electric trucks to reduce the carbon footprint of large manufacturers seems to be a theme nowadays. BMW just added trucks to its fleet in order to ship cars from one of its suppliers to its Munich plant.
Anheuser-Busch is hoping the 40 trucks ordered goes smoothly. The company’s current total fleet is close to 750 trucks. It hopes to reduce its carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2025. These trucks would certainly be a step in the right direction.
It’s not certain whether the company will buy these trucks outright or if it will have its fleet partners make the purchases. What is certain is that the new trucks will be equipped with Tesla’s semi-autonomous pilot system. Commenting on the purchase James Sembrot, senior director of logistics strategy at Anheuser-Busch said, “The important thing was to get the Tesla Semis reserved so we have our place in line, and we'll address details later on.”
It seems that early on companies are excited to see the electric trucks hit the market. At the very least, think of all the pain at the pump that will be avoided.
