# This Guy Invented the Ultimate Old-School Stereo Head Unit With Hidden CarPlay

I'm not sure a '90s project car can be complete without period-correct audio. If it's a track-only build, then OK. But a cruiser? Nuh-uh, bud. You've gotta have a bangin' stereo setup. The [RevisionX double-DIN head unit](<https://revisionx.com.au/>) promises to help with that, as it's a super combination of old-school and new-school. What else can you buy with a foldaway screen running Apple CarPlay, legit equalizer sliders, and low-res graphics that you can customize to feature your own car?

Developed by [an Aussie with a Nissan 180SX](<https://www.instagram.com/revisionx_/>), this is a precious product that's continually evolving. And before you ask, it isn't available to buy—yet. He's still tweaking it here and there before trotting it out to market with whatever undesirable bugs that could be dealt with first.

What you see with the screen extended is a familiar Apple CarPlay or Android Auto interface. It's nice and square without being visually overbearing due to its size. Below, there's a traditional volume knob accompanied by buttons to change the input and stereo presets. You'll find two USB-A slots and—get this—an aux port. But the true centerpiece is the small digital display below the larger interface.

Shown above with a rendering of the builder's Nissan, the tiny screen can show all different types of graphics. A still image of your ride? Sure. A rolling shot set against a Roku City-style background? You got it. Dolphins? Oh, most definitely.

And the aesthetic goes even harder when you flip down the motorized CarPlay screen. That's where you'll find a functional EQ with sliders, and a sound level display that vibes with the music you pick. Clearly, the dude has great taste, as he shows it testing with '90s hip-hop tunes from Wu-Tang, Warren G, and more. Imagine bumping Bonita Applebum by Tribe Called Quest with one of these and some Sony Xplod subs.

Just about everything on this unit is customizable. You can put the EQ on top with the volume and preset controller on bottom, or switch and run 'em vice versa. He's even designed it to work as a single-DIN in case that's all your car accepts. Factor in the selectable colors and the swappable faceplates, and you have a totally personalized stereo to match your totally personalized JDM (or Euro, or American) car.

**RevisionX**

There's no word yet on how much it'll cost, but I can tell you that a ton of time has gone into perfecting the design. That's why it's called RevisionX—it's gone through practically countless iterations to land on a final form that's just right. I could never create something like this on my own, so I'd happily pay someone else for such a slick look, and the functionality really sells it.

I can imagine mine now, with a miniature version of [my Old Body Style Ford F-350](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/40728/whats-your-story-of-buying-back-the-car-that-got-away.md>) cruising [the streets of Tokyo](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/this-giant-six-wheeled-ford-rv-has-lived-in-tokyo-for-years-and-still-gets-driven.md>) on the screen. *Ahhh.*
