# The Tesla Cybertruck Is Dead

![Cybertruck](<https://www.thedrive.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cybertruck_CEF.jpg>)

Tesla's most revolutionary product didn't even last a decade.

On Friday, in the middle of the night [Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X.com](<https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2118591788701421573>) that Tesla Cybertruck production will stop in the middle of 2027. The reason? According to Musk it's to make room for Cybercab production.

![Musk announces Cybertruck dead, November 6, 2026](<https://www.thedrive.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Screenshot-2026-11-06-at-8.15.24-AM.png>)

Musk make the announcement on X.com, which was formerly Twitter before he bought the platform in a hostile takeover, at 12:30 am on Friday. The executive has since posted nine times on X effectively burying the post, though it's currently trending on the platform he owns.

The quiet part out loud: The Cybertruck is [the largest flop in automotive history](<https://futurism.com/advanced-transport/cybertruck-biggest-flop-automotive-history>). Now the CEO, who arguably at that time bet the company on the triangle-shaped electric truck with [body panels glued onto its arguably revolutionary exoskeleton frame,](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-recalls-just-about-every-cybertruck-as-decorative-steel-falls-off.md>) will bet the company on self-driving robo taxis the company calls Cybercabs.

There will be post mortems upon post mortems for the Cybertruck in which the entire saga is dissected. The truck debuted with the fan fare of a circus on November 21, 20219. Broken promises ensued with a truck that looked similar to the promised product with completely different specifications going into production in July 2023.

Sales took off and then imploded quickly. History will show sales never recovered despite Tesla fans claiming Ford employees would end up working the bread line after the Cybertruck would inevitably destroy the Blue Oval and its F-Series pickup truck sales champs. That did not happen.

The Cybertruck's Lead Engineer Wes Morrill [posted on X](<https://x.com/wmorrill3/status/2118598887258644883>) that the "Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab."

In a reply to [a fan noting on X](<https://x.com/OwenSparks/status/2118612244208783666>) the death of the Cybertruck is the "end of an era" Musk responded by saying, "True, but the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time." It's unclear what Musk means by "fleet" as no mention of the Cybertruck production relocating has been made, and the gigacasting setups in the automaker's Gigafactory in Texas are unlikely to just be picked up and moved. It's possible Tesla will build as many Cybertrucks as it can between now and production winding down next summer. SpaceX, which is also run by Musk, [is the largest buyer of Cybertrucks](<https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-bought-tesla-cybertrucks-megapack-ipo-s1-2026-5>).

Tesla already [killed the Model S sedan and Model X crossover SUV](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-has-finally-killed-the-model-s-and-x-to-go-all-in-on-robots-tds.md>) earlier in 2026, both of which were still made in California, to make way for production of the company's robots.

The moves come amid scrutiny over Tesla's self-driving Cybercabs. The robotaxis, [which have no steering wheel, brake pedal, side-view mirrors, or even brake lines](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-cybercab-isnt-just-missing-a-steering-wheel-it-doesnt-even-have-brake-lines.md>), are now out in the wild and [spreading across various states](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/two-tesla-cybercabs-just-landed-in-minneapolis-nobody-knows-why.md>). In October, [Telsa said](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-says-its-weeks-away-from-selling-steering-wheel-pedal-free-cybercabs-to-private-buyers-tds.md>) it's weeks away from selling steering wheel and pedal-free Cybercabs to private buyers. But the [NHTSA opened an formal investigation](<https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/investigation-tesla-cybercab-self-certification>) into Tesla's Cybercab in September, and on Thursday it [was reported](<https://electrek.co/2026/11/05/tesla-cybercab-nhtsa-sworn-answers-confidential/>) that Tesla wanted its sworn answers to the NHTSA kept entirely secret. It's unclear why.

The story of the Cybertruck, and Cybercab, are just starting to unfold with plenty of chapters yet to be written.
