# The C8 Corvette Quietly Solved Screen Overload With a 30-Year-Old Idea

The chorus of drivers, from regular folks to enthusiasts, desperate for digital detox inside their cars is growing louder all the time. Some automakers have been more responsive to this trend than others, but one that was actually ahead of it—*really* ahead of it—was GM when it designed the [C8 Chevy Corvette](<https://www.thedrive.com/car-reviews/review-how-the-2027-chevy-corvette-grand-sport-x-compares-to-e-ray-hybrid.md>).

Many aren't aware that if you crank down the C8's interior brightness knob as low as it can go, you can tap into Night Mode. This doesn't merely make the screens as dim as possible; it's an extra click that kills almost all the light in the cabin, leaving only a few minimalist readouts on the digital instrument cluster for speed, temperature, and fuel. That's it. Even most of the backlit buttons go dark.

By the way, some of the Vette faithful call this "Stealth Mode." That's not really the best nickname for it, since there's already a Stealth engine setting that restricts exhaust flow to make the V8 as quiet as possible, for those times when you're trying to tiptoe into or out of the driveway. But I digress.

Whatever you call it, it's a useful feature that more automakers should lift. Some modern cars, like [the new BMW X5 I drove last week](<https://www.thedrive.com/car-reviews/2027-bmw-ix5-first-drive-review-better-than-the-gas-one.md>), have "simple" display options, but all they do is pare down the deluge of information on screens. They don't transform the entire cabin like the C8's Night Mode does, and let you cruise along in total darkness.

Then again, if you know your GM history, you probably also know that Chevy technically *did* borrow this—just from within the family. Saab, celebrated makers of fighter jets and automobiles, introduced a spiritually similar feature to its terrestrial vehicles about 30 years ago.

Called Night Panel, Saab's version also allowed drivers to black out pretty much all sources of light inside the car, save for two-thirds of the speedometer. Very handy, even back when drivers weren't inundated with full-color screens that can get blindingly bright, as we all suffer with today.

Plus, notice in the demo video above how the needles in the smaller gauges all fall aside when dormant. One of those quirks of real, physical instrument clusters that you sometimes forget about, but always looks so cool.

Fortunately, Team Corvette hasn't kept this good idea all to itself; my Blackwing-owning colleague Byron tells me that Cadillac's highest-performance sedans have it, too. That's great to hear, but I think GM should reconsider restricting this to its sportiest products. Eyes need to be at their best so people can drive their best, no matter how fast they're going or what they happen to be behind the wheel of.
