Boxer engines have a certain beauty and simplicity, whether they're flat-sixes or, in this case, Rünge's new flat-eight. The latest air-cooled mill to hit the market boasts 32 valves, 5.3 liters of displacement, dual overhead cams per bank, and a 12:1 compression ratio.

The [video](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_w7N28v2i0>) below shows the flat-eight on a dyno test run. Nothing dramatic happens, but it still catches your attention with a unique sound reminiscent of a vintage endurance racer. Plus, look at it. It's beautifully crafted.

Furthermore, Rünge promises this new air-cooled unit will slip right into a classic 911 G-body, so if you've got a 1974 to 1989 Porsche 911 that needs an engine (or an upgrade), this should theoretically work.

Rünge hasn't released the horsepower or torque specs for its new build, saying those figures are coming later this year, around December. I'd guess that's also when they'll reveal the price—though if you [look at some of the builder's former creations](<https://rungecars.com/>), a bespoke engine can run you up to $250,000. I don't expect this one will be any different.

The Minnesota-based company specializes in old-school coachbuilding, using traditional wooden bucks to hammer metal bodies to make beautiful cars. It also dabbles in furniture making and was established by Christopher Rünge back in 2011.
