Welcome to [The Downshift](<https://www.thedrive.com/category/the-downshift>), a daily sweep of the morning’s top headlines from the auto industry and car culture, curated by *The Drive’s* editorial team. Each story gets a short summary and a link to the original source for those who want to dive deeper. A big thank you to Joel Feder for helming TDS while I ventured from one coast to the other, for reasons that will become clear next week.

Here’s what’s cooking on the morning of Thursday, October 15, 2026:

🔊 A new episode of *[The Drivecast](<https://www.thedrive.com/category/podcast>)*, *The Drive’s* weekly podcast, went live yesterday on [Apple Podcasts](<https://go.skimresources.com/?id=138113X1700775&isjs=1&jv=15.7.1&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedrive.com%2Fnews%2Fnew-podcast-launch-the-drivecast-ep1-volvo&url=https%3A%2F%2Fpodcasts.apple.com%2Fus%2Fpodcast%2Fthe-drivecast%2Fid1872827762&xs=1&xtz=360&xuuid=7b2527215ac56f0f114aa178aa6ebe52&xjsf=other_click__contextmenu+%5B2%5D&xcust=podcast%2Fthe-drivecast-ep-2_0dpmiJ2pIIm72q7miPIOFOY>), [Spotify](<https://open.spotify.com/show/7uifpLcFDaV3qhSC8UxwUu>), and wherever you get your podcasts. [It's an interview](<https://www.thedrive.com/podcast/the-next-corvette-is-coming-its-top-engineer-told-us-what-it-cant-be.md>) with Corvette and GM performance boss Tony Roma, so you won't want to miss that if you haven't heard it yet.

📹 A man in Georgia is suing Flock and the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office for "illegal \[license-plate tracking\] searches over many months without probable cause and unrelated to any specific investigation," per his attorneys. The plaintiff claims that his plate was searched multiple times while he had ongoing legal action against the department for an arrest where excessive force was allegedly used; supposedly, officers entered frivolous justifications into Flock's system to initiate the searches. Flock recently announced a planned change to this behavior, where officers will be disallowed from searching its database without legitimate case codes going forward. A Flock spokesperson said, "We disagree with the claims raised in this lawsuit and intend to vigorously defend our position in court." *\[[Ars Technica](<https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/10/georgia-man-sues-flock-sheriffs-office-over-alleged-alpr-fueled-retaliation/>)\]*

🆕 There are not one but two big automotive reveal events happening today. First, Porsche will unveil its Mission S hypercar at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Then, at 8:55 p.m., Tesla will reveal the Roadster it first announced a decade ago—unless the company decides to push the show off by another two weeks, that is. Catch the livestreams for both at the following links. *\[[Porsche](<https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/mission-s-preview/>), [Tesla](<https://www.tesla.com/roadster>)\]*

🪖 Stellantis is exploring the idea of a super-compact, Willys-inspired electric Jeep...for Europe. This vehicle would be even smaller than the Avenger, meaning it would join Stellantis' growing cast of tiny EVs, like the reborn Citroën 2CV, that are very much designed for buyers across the Atlantic and not here in the States. Jeep Europe boss Xavier Peugeot (*yes* relation) indicated such a model wouldn't emerge until 2030 at the earliest. *\[[Automotive News](<https://www.autonews.com/stellantis/ane-jeep-eyes-smaller-suv-willys-based-1013/>)\]*

⬇️ Volkswagen Group CEO Thomas Schäfer said that the manufacturer will reduce its total number of models and variants across all of its brands by 2035 through "natural transition," due to a combination of tightening emissions regulations in Europe as well as an intent to preserve only its best-selling products. *\[[Autocar](<https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-paris-motor-show/volkswagen-gradually-halve-line-through-natural-transition>)\]*

🐍 The futuristic, "disappearing" display technology inside Alfa Romeo's Cuorerosso hybrid V6 sports-car concept is intended for the brand's production cars, according to Alfa Romeo Head of Products Daniele Chiari. The coupe features a screen beneath its slanted center console called the "Magma Display" that goes invisible when not needed, and it's controlled by a physical dial and switches. "What we want to do is to detox our interior," Chiari said, citing the sameness of automotive cabins today, as well as the need for Europe's car industry to set itself apart from trends defined by Chinese competition. *\[[Autoblog](<https://www.autoblog.com/news/alfa-romeo-is-fed-up-with-giant-touchscreens-and-has-a-different-plan>)\]*

🚗 The Nissan Altima, seemingly against all odds, will persist into the 2027 model year. Naturally, the sedan won't see any significant changes, though all-wheel drive will no longer be offered on the introductory SV trim, while pricing across the board will hike by $210. The 2027 Altima will start at $27,790, including destination. *\[[CarBuzz](<https://carbuzz.com/2027-nissan-altima-pricing-october-2026/>)\]*

A car lover and gamer since his earliest memories, Adam came to know the automotive world through video games. First it was Daytona USA, Sega Rally, and Ridge Racer; then came Need For Speed, which inspired an encyclopedic knowledge of '90s supercars, and, of course, Gran Turismo. If not for them, he'd assuredly be doing something else right now. Adam is based in the suburbs outside Philly, where there are ample roads for his hot hatch to stretch its legs. In his car, he's probably listening to indie rock, drum and bass, or Yankees baseball.
