# Uber Hires NASA Veteran to Work On Flying Car Project

A 30-year NASA veteran is leaving the agency to help Uber develop flying cars.

Most recently, Mark Moore worked as a [chief technologist in mobility at NASA'](<https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-moore-99582787>)s Langley Research Center before making the move to Uber to become the director of engineering for aviation—a.k.a. flying cars—at the ride-hailing company.

## Flying cars could be coming soon...seriously

In October, Uber said that it wanted to look into flying car development in an effort to continue pushing the transportation industry further into the future. The ride-hailing company wants "to play whatever role is most helpful to [accelerate this industry's development,](<https://www.uber.com/elevate.pdf>)" the company wrote in an outline.

“I can’t think of another company in a stronger position to be the leader for this new ecosystem and make the urban electric VTOL market real,” Moore said to [*Bloomberg*](<https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-06/uber-hires-veteran-nasa-engineer-to-develop-flying-cars>).

As for Moore's flying car background, the researcher has previously published writings about how plausible the concept might be. And through his work, Moore has inspired Google co-founder Larry Page to invest in two different car startups.

Uber continues to grow as not just a ride-hailing company, but a full-on transportation technology dedicate to the future of people-moving. Last week, *The Drive* reported that Uber would be turning to Daimler to supply the[ ride-hailing company with autonomous cars ](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/7253/daimler-will-build-self-driving-cars-for-uber>)in upcoming years.
