# Speeding Lamborghini Aventador Runs Red Light, Strikes Chicago Police Cruiser: Report

A Chicago police officer was hospitalized after a [Lamborghini Aventador](<https://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/23746/2019-lamborghini-aventador-svj-first-drive-review-driving-the-nurburgrings-new-supercar-king>) is said to have struck his cruiser while traveling at high speeds.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred just before 4 a.m. on Saturday in the Near North Side when police say that the Aventador ran a [red light](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/28120/texas-bill-aims-to-ban-red-light-cameras-despite-generating-5-8m-revenue>) and [struck a police cruiser](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/28546/man-sideswipes-police-car-while-searching-for-saved-by-the-bell-episode-on-his-phone>) which was driving through an intersection. The officer involved was sent to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Police [reportedly](<https://chicago.cbslocal.com/2019/07/27/lamborghini-strikes-police-vehicle/>) detained a man for questioning, eventually releasing him at the scene of the accident. Officers then issued two citations to the driver of the Lamborghini.

The accident also took down a traffic light on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, resulting in a road closure into the morning sunlight while crews worked to clear the damage and reinstall the traffic signal.

A photo of the accident was posted to a [Chicago subreddit](<https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/cifcww/lamborghini_crash/>) where several users reportedly [recognized the vehicle](<https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/cifcww/lamborghini_crash/ev5s4bo/>). Two separate individuals noted that they heard revving around the time of the accident, and one user who was staying at a nearby hotel [reported hearing](<https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/cifcww/lamborghini_crash/ev5i1bb/>) the Aventador taking off from a light only seconds before the incident.

Chicago is no stranger to supercar crashes. Last year a Lamborghini Huracan Spyder managed to [wedge itself under a parked car](<https://www.facebook.com/abc7chicago/photos/wow-a-lamborghini-convertible-slammed-into-a-parked-car-in-chicagos-west-loop-th/10156940128721162/>) in Chicago's West Loop, and in 2016, [another Huracan](<https://twitter.com/stephenbardo/status/764556810909052930>) was [split in two](<https://www.thedrive.com/article/15120/lamborghini-huracan-splits-in-half-and-bursts-into-flames-after-miami-crash>) before catching fire when it struck another vehicle.
