# Used Ferrari California Sells for $445k

The 2012 Ferrari California was the last new Ferrari available with a manual transmission. Maranello [added a stick-shift option](<https://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/22/manual-labor-3-pedal-ferrari-california-slower-less-efficient/>) for the convertible for 2010, then got rid of it two years later due to lack of demand. You know, because [only two Californias](<https://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/that-few-only-two-ferrari-californias-sold-with-manual-transmissions-127029/>) left the factory with that storied six-speed shifter. Two. Ever. In the whole world. One of them [was sold in the UK](<https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/features/opinion/tim-pollard/ferrari-click-clack-manual-transmissions-rip/>).

This is how silly humans are: We won’t buy sufficient manuals off the showroom floor to keep them in production, but we’ll pay daffy amounts after the fact. Exhibit A: The second manual gearbox-equipped California [went on the block](<https://www.artcurial.com/en/asp/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=2877+++++118+&refno=10544529#sthash.wruyCTQT.dpbs>) at the recent [Artcurial Retromobile auction](<https://www.artcurial.com/en/asp/searchresults.asp?st=U&archive_sale_value=2877+++&archive1=View>) in Paris, [selling for €330,000](<https://www.carscoops.com/2016/02/ferrari-california-sells-for-half-mill.html>), more than €393,000 after costs. That is more than double the price of a brand new 2016 Ferrari California T, which is €188,353 in France. Translated into our Benjamins, that final auction price is $444,363—for a car that cost $196,450 when new.

But it gets worse. Exhibit B: A [Ferrari 599 six-speed](<https://www.rmsothebys.com/am15/amelia-island/lots/2007-ferrari-599-gtb/1072852>) sold for $682,000 at an RM Auctions event during last year’s Amelia Island Concours. The 599 sold for $264,034 when new. Even the private market is awash in the delirium. Check the values for a [2004 Ferrari 575M on Hagerty](<https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/2004-Ferrari-575M-Maranello>) and you’ll discover some small print that reads, “+$30,000 for 6-spd.” And, yes, a $30K surcharge that adds 23-percent to the $131,000 cost of a concours-quality 575M is as crazy as it sounds. Used prices for an F355 with the six-speed manual or the F1 gearbox are at parity, but the F1 ‘box was a $10,000 option when new.

So, here’s your PSA: Buy manual cars new, now, instead of paying twice as much a decade from now.
