Pre-fabs are awesome, but this less-permanent solution is an excellent choice for many.

No matter how big your garage is, you’ll never have enough room. Good garage storage systems do go a long way in keeping a handle on things. But, seeing as working on cars inherently makes you a hoarder, it’s only a matter of time until they’re overflowing with parts and tools. When they reach that point, models like the Keter Cortina Mega can be highly appealing.

Any shed is a great way to get items out of a garage and clear up storage space. They can be a pretty hefty investment, though, and are a permanent solution not everyone wants to commit to. Plastic sheds like the Keter Cortina Mega can go up in about an hour, can be relocated at any time, and are a fraction of the cost of metal or timber alternatives. I’ve had a chance to check one out for myself, and I really do get the appeal for anyone who needs a little extra room and can’t commit to a bigger bill.

The Rundown:

The Keter Cortina Mega is a small storage shed. The external dimensions are a 52.1-inch height, 43-inch depth, and 75-inch width. It offers a total of 71 cubic feet for storage. You won’t be keeping a ride-on mower in it, but it’s more than spacious enough for your pusher, garbage cans, and various other small tools and chemicals. Two swing-out doors and a hydraulically assisted lid offer easy access to whatever’s within. You can also pair it with an optional shelf to bolster internal storage.

That said, Keter has a long list of offerings. Most of them share the same basic genetics with the Cortina Mega, only in a variety of sizes and configurations. This shed is made with a weather-resistant resin. The material is easy to clean, super lightweight, and easy to work with. It also offers a nice external appearance for the shed. Keter states it won’t fade with time, helping it retain its aesthetic appeal as well as any other option. Speaking of finish, this Cortina Mega is graphite in color, but some other options are available in various finishes, allowing you to tailor your selection by taste. As for pricing Keter’s Cortina Mega retails for $749.99 and comes with a limited 10-year warranty.

Setting Up the Keter Cortina Mega

One of the major advantages of the Keter Cortina Mega is the super simple assembly. Now, there are a lot of small parts, and you need to follow the instructions, but you only need a few basic tools to get the job done. In fact, a screwdriver does the vast majority of the work. And if you’re stupid enough to risk breaking things, like me, an impact driver helps you move along very quickly. A helping hand can really speed things up, but I was able to blast it together on my own in a little over an hour, and that’s while stopping to take pictures most of the way.

The Cortina Mega gives you the option to add an internal shelf. However, you’re only given some of the materials to do so. Keter provides the necessary hardware. It’s up to you to source the 12-inch by 69.9-inch board that will serve as the shelf. If you elect to do this, you can expect to add a few extra bucks to the overall investment and a few more steps to assembly, but it’s still a fairly simple and easy project.

Once fully assembled, I really started to see the appeal of the shed. Again, putting it together was really easy, and the finished product looks pretty good. The graphite color might not suit everyone’s taste, but again, more neutral color options are available to theoretically help these pieces match any setting. The shed itself is very light. That was beneficial to assembly because everything was really easy to work with. It also makes relocating the shed easy. So, if you need to move it around the property for any reason, that won’t be a problem. Neither will tearing it down if you opt to move or need to retire it for a short period of time.

Internal storage of the Cortina Mega is actually perfect for my intended use. It’s more than big enough for me to relocate all of the lawn and outdoor equipment that’s been taking up useful real estate on the shop floor. It’s also not so big that finding a place for it was hard. It feels right at home behind the garage.

The Keter Cortina Mega shed has been in commission for about a month now. It’s definitely done a great job of keeping the elements out. That said, it’s not as sturdy as something made of sheet metal or lumber. I wouldn’t count on it to keep pests out. It’s important to say that because it’s advertised to work with garbage cans and can even be set up to lift the lids automatically. I don’t foresee the resin walls doing much to keep bears or even determined raccoons from finding their way in.

The Verdict:

Overall, Keter’s Cortina Mega shed is a really great choice for the person who needs a shed, but has limited resources. It’s also a solid option for someone who doesn’t want an outdoor storage solution as permanent as a steel or wooden shed. It might be a fair compromise when dealing with pesky HAOs and landlords. There are more affordable options in a similar footprint, and that will ultimately create a bit of a uphill battle. However, Keter sheds do look a lot better than most of the direct competition. I’d say perhaps even the best-looking choice when it comes to plastic sheds.
