Those of us who grew up in the 80s were preconditioned to be everyday carry enthusiasts. Angus MacGyver taught us we could fix anything with a Swiss Army Knife and a roll of duct tape. Sometimes you also need a Hershey Bar or a blood pressure cuff, but those were found in situ. Sadly, 40 years later, the world is a lot more complicated, and our problems seem bigger. But it’s also never been easier to channel your inner MacGyver, thanks to internet EDC deals on the gear he’d use to overcome anything.
This seems like sacrilege when talking about this as I’m reminiscing about Good Ole Mac, but I don’t carry duct tape around with me. If you’ve ever had to clean the adhesive residue left by everyone’s favorite silver tape, then you understand why. There’s a tape that’s stronger than duct tape, although its adhesive isn’t as tenacious. Gaffer tape is a true cloth tape, whereas duct tape is vinyl tape with cloth reinforcement. The tensile strength for most duct tapes is between 12 and 25 pounds per inch. The average gaffer tape has a tensile strength between 25 and 50 pounds per inch. That’s why I carry gaffer tape. I have rolls of gaffer tape like this XFasten Residue-Free Matte Black, in my house, in my car, and sometimes even in my EDC bag. It’s only $7.99 per roll with coupon, but remember, you can’t take it through TSA.
Now, back in the 80s, everyone thought carrying a Swiss Army Knife was as prepared as you could be. The Victorinox Spartan Pocket Knife, available for $27.50, was one of Mac’s favorites, and he carried it in several episodes. If he was still in action today, he might choose something more like the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit XBS Swiss Army Knife for $137.74, which is a true modern multitool.
I threw in a Coast few knives and a flashlights because we can’t do an EDC deals post without those. Right? And while the discounts themselves are good, you can also score free shipping on orders of $75 or more. That really ups the appeal of the Coast 1919 Reserve Limited Edition Knife Set for $89.99. Below those, I added some real MacGyverie goodness. Scroll down and have a look.
