As anybody with a love for cars and decent fashion sense can attest, automotive clothing is atrocious. The state of things—NASCAR windbreakers, white polos dotted with BMW logos, garish rosso corsa sneakers—is particularly frustrating because the kit serious drivers actually wear is fantastic. Think: McQueen’s Persols, James Dean’s leather jacket or Sean Connery’s Thunderball-era Breitling. All functional, unselfconscious and cool.
Finally, that aesthetic has made it into our era. Jon Ruti has launched Rivay NYC, a purveyor of automotive clothes you’ll actually want to wear. Taking cues from those midcentury petrolhead icons, Rivay’s jackets, sweatshirts and pants are made from French terrycloth, waxed cotton and enamel. Simple. Smart. One knit crewneck just reads “Le Moto.” And our favorite piece, the black sweatpants, are modeled after Sixties motocross uniforms. Grease monkeys appreciate the nods; laypeople just see stylish, technical-looking streetwear.
