What Is Porsche’s Motorsport Pyramid?
From 911 GT3 Cup to 919 Hybrid LMP1, Porsche pushes drivers to progress up their ladder.
Porsche has a smooth progression for young drivers coming into motorsport all the way up to the top level of prototype sports car racing. They move drivers from their first year in GT3 cup up the ladder through national Carrera Cup championships to compete on the world stage at the Carrera Cup support race at Le Mans. Winners of Carrera Cup championships are given scholarships to help them continue their progression through the ranks. The best of the best get promoted to international Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, or to Porsche's factory teams to run in GT3 class racing with their 911 GT3 R racer, and can progress up another level to GTE classes running the new mid-engine 911 RSR. If you're really good, and you prove yourself within Porsche's team, you can be promoted all the way up to their 919 Hybrid LMP1 car, as Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy have done, both Carrera Cup champions in their own right.
Next year, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB will return to Le Mans as a key support race to the 24 hour endurance classic. Porsche's newest video shows a behind-the-scenes look at how they work to develop and promote drivers they trust in their cars. Porsche calls their Motorsport Pyramid "the perfect career pathway for drivers to progress through the sports car racing echelons". They claim that no other manufacturer supports incoming drivers like Porsche does, and I think I believe them. With motorsport of all levels having been a staple of Porsche for decades, it only makes sense that they are constantly working to cultivate the next generation of superstar drivers. This is a short promotional video that is worth watching if you're a fan of international GT racing, or an upcoming driver yourself. I, for one, commend Porsche for bringing such talents to the forefront.
