This week on Drive Wire, we’re doing things a little differently. We’re taking an end-of-year look back at some of the biggest and most interesting stories we covered in 2016.

On today’s episode, we’re looking back at two stories about our electric future. First up: Jaguar Land Rover has declared that half of its models will be either hybrid or fully electric vehicles by the year 2020.

The carmaker’s CEO Dr. Ralf Speth made the announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. That was the same show where the company showed off the battery-powered I-PACE SUV concept car, which previews a production electric crossover.

Another entrant into the electric vehicle ring is Lucid Motors, a Silicon Valley-based automotive start-up. Last month, Lucid announced that it would be producing its new 1,000-horsepower battery-powered luxury sedan in Casa Grande, Arizona. Production of the new car, which will be called the Lucid Air, is expected to begin in 2018; if all goes according to plan, the factory will employ 2,000 people by 2022.
