Drive Wire For December 21st, 2016: NYC’S Intense Traffic May Help Prevent a Berlin-Style Attack
The city is dense and has intense traffic, which would make it hard to get a truck up to ramming speed.
Twelve people were killed and 48 were injured on Monday, when a still-at-large terrorist rammed a truck loaded with 25-tons of steel beams into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin. Following the incident, many United States cities tightened security around holiday-related events—but NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller believes that the thick, intense traffic in New York City provides an extra layer of security against vehicle-based attacks because the traffic naturally makes it difficult to get up to ramming speed.
Deputy Commissioner Miller also explained the NYPD has detailed methods for preventing truck attacks and similar terror events. And, it's worth noting that there are currently no immediate threats to New York City, AM New York is reporting.
