Drive Wire for August 3rd, 2016: EPA and Automakers Clash Over 2025 Fuel Economy Standards
Car companies insist the rule could force them to build models customers don’t want.
Today on Drive Wire, the Environmental Protection Agency and two groups representing automakers have begun clashing over the plan to boost car companies' fleet-wide fuel economy averages to 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025. The carmakers' advocates claim the number is too high, and will force automobile manufacturers to build vehicles that the market does not seem to want; the EPA, on the other hand, says the industry has already made impressive strides towards the goal, and believes it remains achievable.
