Hey guys, it’s Christina Thompson, and this is Drive Wire for Thursday, October 1st.
News from the future….which, Elon Musk announced from his factory in Fremont, California last night, is here in the form of the Tesla Model X SUV. In its top specification, the seven-passenger crossover will sell for $144,000. The Model X can travel 257 miles on a charge, tow 5,000 lbs, get to 60 mph 3.2 seconds, and will scare/impress your neighbors with its trick double-hinged "falcon" rear doors. Prospective owners may now make a $5,000 deposit to reserve their Model X. But should be prepared to wait a year before they can get their hands on it. Paypal is, of course, accepted.
Porsche is unveiling yet another special edition 911! And this Porsche, the Rennsport Reunion Carrera GTS, is truly made for Porsche super fans. Top of the line options come standard in this 911… like special edition cosmetic frills and custom leatherwork. Maybe the most special thing about this car? It’s only available with a manual transmission. Well there’s that, and only 25 will be sold… at $150,000 a pop.
Rumors from Mazda, which can only mean one thing— rotary-engine madness! This beautiful teaser photo is supposedly a new non-Miata sports car Mazda’s hard at work on. All you can see is gorgeous flowing lines and a whole lot of shadow. The brand says this car—which will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show—will measure up to the greats of the past. Keeping it company? The Cosmo, Mazda’s first rotary-engine car.
Turning to gear news, here’s a brilliant little gadget that every camper could and probably should get more familiar with. While enjoying the great outdoors, you’ll need to eat, or at least make coffee, and the ingenious G2 Folding Firebox Stove will let you do that with any combustible substance you can find. Then, just fold it away when you’re done. $39 on the Folding Firebox Kickstarter page gets you a stove, a storage case, and a way to cook out anywhere you want… after it delivers in November.
