That said, the big news is the addition of the Hybrid model. The Crosstrek Hybrid doesn’t scream “I’m the efficient one.” It flies under the radar with a small hybrid badge on the front doors and rear tailgate, along with hybrid-specific four-spoke turned wheels. The Armadillo-looking lifted hatchback remains the same plastic-clad warrior we all know with 8.7 inches of ground clearance. But the infotainment system is the automaker’s last-gen model, so it already feels old. Most pointedly, it’s sluggish, and most times once the car is started, Apple CarPlay doesn't engage until minutes later. The cargo area clocks in at a usable 18.6 cubic feet, but it’s worth noting that’s down 1.3 cubic feet from the standard gas-powered Crosstrek because the 1.1-kWh battery pack eats up space beneath the cargo floor. Space swells to 50.6 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded. The one quirk I noted was that the $35,415 Crosstrek Hybrid Sport tested featured adaptive LED headlights that turned into the corners but lacked a heated steering wheel. An 88-kW motor with a planetary gearset sits between a smaller starter motor, all housed in the same housing. Enthusiasts can take note that this setup replaces the standard gas-powered Crosstrek’s continuously variable transmission. The combined system outputs 194 horsepower, and the electric motor alone provides 199 lb-ft of torque. It takes all of about four minutes and a few stop signs or stop lights to realize the hybrid Crosstrek is the smoothest, quickest, and quietest offering in the model lineup today. It’s not quick or fast, but the electric motor's instant torque makes up for the Crosstrek’s modest off-the-line output. At highway speeds, the power fill is slightly less when you need passing power, but it's still there. Clicking the S button on the steering wheel remaps the throttle and power curve to unlock that power earlier, but I didn’t find it necessary day to day. Light throttle inputs allowed the Crosstrek Hybrid to cruise through my neighborhood or away from stop signs on electric power alone, but you won’t get far without the gas engine kicking on. Throttle input below about 20% will trigger the gas engine. The combined systems delivered linear, smooth power that quieted as soon as I let off the throttle. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters can simulate gears, but they just seemed out of place for this thing's mission. Despite the 330-pound weight penalty of the hybrid system (mostly that battery pack), the Crosstrek Hybrid felt peppy because of that instant torque. The MacPherson front and double wishbone rear suspension absorbed broken Midwest pavement without issue, and the lifted hatchback never felt like it was riding on stilts. Sporty? No, but comfortable? Absolutely.
