At 3:40am Friday, thieves gained access to a luxury mechanic’s garage in southeast Melbourne. At 3:44am, they were gone. So was a pair of Ferraris, a 328 GTB and a 365 Daytona. The former is worth roughly $100,000, the later $2.5M. At least.

That’s because it’s got pedigree. The 1973 Daytona in question was originally owned by Christian Mary McEwen, matriarch of the Hesketh Formula 1 team. James Hunt drove this car around sometimes. So did Dodi Fayed, the boyfriend of Princess Diana, who died in the infamous 1997 car crash. Oh yeah, and Roger Waters, too. You know, the lead singer of Pink Floyd. He used it for motoring to the French Riviera recording studio where The Wall was born.

The Daytona was shipped to Australia for display at the Motorclassica exhibition; it was in the shop for an alternator job. The knife? A full restoration of the car had been completed three weeks ago.
