# BMW Creates New Video Series on 5-Series History

BMW's next 5-Series is shaping up nicely. It will bring with it a new iteration of speed and luxury, besting its previous models in both categories. It should harbor all of BMW's freshest tech and powertrain wizardry—[the 2017 M550i will be faster to 60 MPH than even the current M5](<https://jalopnik.com/the-2017-bmw-m550i-is-faster-than-the-current-m5-1787726894>). Now that's saying something! Rumors of all wheel drive and hybrid M models are all the range right now, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

BMW wants to give you a bit of a backstory to their forthcoming luxury sedan. The 5-Series started with humble roots, working its way up through simple roots that have since developed into a consistent top competitor in its segment. The E12 generation is the focus of this video, displaying a lesser-known model than the E28 that followed it.

They were much different in the '70s, weren't they? They carried a utilitarian wit about them while keeping their heads above the upper-class water. A mix of these things have given us the 5-series we see today, and BMW doesn't want you to forget its beginnings.
