Most of the SUVs filling American roads today were not designed to go off the beaten path. Good on Toyota, then, for not only keeping around a few rough-and-ready, body-on-frame rigs like the Land Cruiser and the 4Runner, but not leaving them to rot—as is proven by the arrival of the new Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road and Off-Road Premium models.

Though not as aggressive and tough off-road as the top-line TRD Pro model, the new trims have black painted wheels, a center console lined with fake carbon fiber, TRD off-road floor mats, and TRD markings on the front headrests. But the mechanicals underneath are what really impress. Both models come equipped with Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select system, while an electric-locking rear differential comes standard on both TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which helps provide intense suspension articulation and wheel travel at low speeds, can be added on as an option.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but based on Toyota's press release, it seems as though the two new models will land above the SR5 Premium trim and below the Limited. (Assuming the carmaker listed the trims in value order, which seems like the logical thing to do.) With the 2016 4Runner SR5 Premium starting at $38,365 and the Limited kicking off at $42,125, we expect the TRD Off-Road to go for roughly $40,000.

To The Drive, the 4Runner is known as one of the most capable affordable SUVs currently on the market. In January, we shared a video of one no-cares-given 4Runner owner who decided he was going to traverse through the 30 inches of snow that slammed the streets of New York City. For more than 30 years, the Toyota 4Runner has developed and maintained a reputation for toughness all around the world. With these two new models, it seems like the carmaker has no intention of letting that change.
