Inside McLaren’s P1 GTR Factory Garage
Yes, that’s 12 McLaren P1 GTRs all together. Yes, it’s okay to wipe away the drool now.
What you are about to see will brighten your entire week: Behold, a dozen McLaren P1 GTRs. This is the McLaren P1 GTR Workshop in Woking, England. Located just down the way from Macca’s GT racing team and the McLaren Special Operations unit, the P1 GTR Workshop is the headquarters for McLaren’s efforts to take care of its track-tuned hypercar—and the wealthy car geeks who drive them, of course.
As with the Ford GT, not just anyone can buy a McLaren P1 GTR. In fact, the whole lot is available only to current P1 owners, of which there are but 375. For just over $3 million, buyers of this second P1 will get a version of the already-capable car with 62 more horsepower, 110 fewer pounds, a lowered suspension, and an enormous fixed rear wing. Most valuably, Mclaren P1 GTR owners will also receive a roster of human beings. See, buying into the P1 GTR program doesn’t just score you a 986 horsepower carbon-fiber supercar that can’t be driven on public roads. It’s also a ticket into a world where a crew of extremely competent handlers and engineers will happily treat you as though your name were Jenson Button.
A world where you can fire off an email and have Frank Stephenson himself gin up a livery for your car. A world where not only is your car outfitted with a seat made just for you, you’re also given a tailor-made racing suit and helmet—and given a personal trainer. A world where your car will be maintained in a spotless garage, then brought to you at world-class racetracks around the globe, where McLaren’s coaches and mechanics give council on how to be faster.
But, let’s be honest, even the most talented of the billionaires (to call potential buyers of the P1 GTR “the one percent” is disingenuous) will probably crash this car. Today, there are fifty. Tomorrow? Forty-seven. The day after it rains in Dubai? Thirty. Better get your kicks in now with these fantastic factory photos. They’re beautiful, yes, but portend an ominous future: a Kennedy family portrait, perhaps?
