The phrase that pays recently is “plug-in hybrid.” Several companies have been touting entries into the space like Chrysler with the [first plug-in hybrid](<https://www.thedrive.com/article/16152/chrysler-pacifica-named-green-car-reports-best-car-to-buy>) minivan. [This week Honda provided pricing info](<https://hondanews.com/releases/2018-honda-clarity-plug-in-hybrid-pricing-to-start-at-33-400>) for its latest plug-in hybrid, the [2018 Honda Clarity](<https://thestore.thedrive.com/>).

Just in time for the holidays, the car will go on sale December 1st nationwide with an MSRP of $33,400 for its highly equipped standard trim and $36,600 in its Touring trim. It may be the last time buyers will be able to apply the benefit of the $7,500 federal income tax credit.

The all-electric range is 47 miles on a full charge. For longer trips, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid uses its 1.5L Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine to generate electricity and even act as a direct power source. This gives the Clarity an overall range of 340 miles. The electric motors provide 181 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque while drawing power for a 17-kiliowatt hour battery pack with has a recharge time of 2.5 hours at 240 volts.

The hybrid model joins the full-electric Clarity Electric and [Clarity Fuel Cell](<https://www.thedrive.com/tech/14431/are-hydrogen-cars-the-next-big-thing-again>). The Clarity sits at the forefront of Honda’s plan to bring [electric vehicle technology](<https://www.thedrive.com/news/13922/honda-teases-urban-ev-concept>) into the mainstream. The company wants electrified vehicles to make up two-thirds of its global sales by 2030.

The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid leads the pack with the highest all-electric range rating of any plug-in hybrid sedan and the most comprehensive standard equipment, spacious five-passenger cabin and a roomy trunk – all at an affordable price point."

In case you were wondering, the Clarity has a Sport mode which unlocks the full power of the drive-train at 212 horsepower. For when you’re in hurry to go plug your car in.
