Ferrari Formula 1 hero Michael Schumacher won the fabled Monaco Grand Prix five times in his career–only Ayrton Senna has more victories at the grandiose city-circuit (6). His final win there came in 2001, beating Rubens Barrichello and Jacques Villeneuve on his way to a commanding 4th Drivers' Championship.

The Ferrari F2001 piloted by Schumacher at the race has since been put up for auction at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York, making it the first vehicle to be sold at the event. After a six-minute bidding war between eight attendees, the hero car eventually fetched $7,504,000 which is a record sale for modern-era Formula 1 cars.

This chassis #211 example was an instrumental part of Schumacher's dominant championship win. At the end of the 2001 Formula 1 season, the German had won nine Grand Prix races and tallied 123 points, nearly double that of runner-up David Coulthard who had 65. Additionally, it's the same car that Schumacher drove to victory in that year's Hungarian Grand Prix where he clinched the championship. It initiated Ferrari's dominance in the early 2000s as Schumacher would go on to claim three more Drivers' Titles alongside Ferrari's seven Constructors' Championships throughout the decade.

The car went under the hammer and far exceeded its expected sale price of $4 million. A portion of the proceeds went towards Michael Schumacher’s Keep Fighting Foundation, a global non-profit organization founded by the legendary racer.
