The Mercedes-Benz high-performance sub-brand, AMG is proving that halo cars aren’t just for show. It's seeing significant growth and is starting to take up a sizeable chunk of the total sales for Mercedes in the U.S.—AMG’s highest-volume market. The U.S. sales of AMG vehicles jumped 50 percent in 2017 through November for a total of 30,116 units. It’s worth noting that in that same period, overall Mercedes-Benz sales in the States dropped 2 percent down to 302,043.

I’ll save you a little math and tell you that 9.9 percent of Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold in the first 11 months of 2017 wore AMG badges. For reference, AMG accounted for just 6.8 percent of U.S. Mercedes sales in 2016. What used to be a way of showing off what the brand is capable of performance-wise to drive sales of the rest of the Mercedes lineup is now becoming quite the cash cow.

A lot of AMG’s growth is thanks to the new AMG 43 line. The AMG 43 is available in a wide range of AMG cars including the C-Class, E-Class, GLC, GLE, and SLC. The AMG 43 engine is a 3.0-liter Biturbo V6 making 362-horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque and has proven to be a popular choice well-suited for high-performance luxury. It’s also one of the more affordable ways to go if you want a new AMG in your life.

Another reason AMG has been so successful is the sheer amount of different AMG models available. Mercedes has done a fantastic job giving the AMG treatment to everything it sells and making it much more than just an appearance package. No matter which Mercedes-Benz model is to your liking, you can get it in the form of a high-performance AMG model.

We hope the rest of the luxury car business takes notice of how well AMG is doing and responds accordingly. We can never have enough Audi RS, BMW M, or Cadillac V vehicles in the world.
