According to anonymous inside sources at Volkswagen, the next generation Golf GTI will boast a mild hybrid powertrain with electric boost, AutoCar reports. The entire new Golf range will upgrade to a 48V electrical system, something its Audi and Bentley siblings have already employed, to improve both performance and efficiency.

By the looks of it, Volkswagen is prioritizing its gas-powered engines—most likely due to the effects of Dieselgate—and will continue to use its near-and-dear turbocharged 2.0 liter inline-four for the Mk8 GTI. The electric upgrades will include an electric compressor—something we've seen in the Audi SQ7, helping provide lower-end grunt and effectively broadening the powertrain's torque curve—and an integrated starter motor that will augment the 2.0 liter engine's power, a la the McLaren P1's torque fill technology.

Apparently the Mk8 will be based on the outgoing MQB platform, but weighing a good 100 pounds less than the outgoing generation's. Its looks will come from VW Group Designer Michael Mauer, who's responsible for the current Porsche lineup's design. Apparently the new Golf range has already spent a year in production, but it won't be for another three years before the car's on sale. Despite that, the weight reduction, improved powertrain, and likely great looks make it a winning recipe.
