Ford Unveils Facelifted 2018 Mustang Convertible
The coupe’s nip-tucked front-end now comes on the open-top pony car, too.
Ford pulled the covers off of its 2018 Ford Mustang coupe on Tuesday, but for whatever reason, the carmaker held off on showing off the open-roof version of the retro ponycar until now. As we imagined—and as it usually goes with the Mustang—the convertible is pretty much exactly the same as the coupe, but with a power-folding soft top for those days when you're craving a nice slap of warm breeze.
The 2018 Ford Mustang Convertible, announced Friday, has the Mustang's new front-end, optional MagneRide suspension, powertrain options, and redesigned 12-inch digital gauge cluster. There are new colors to choose from, as well as new wheels. As we noticed when the coupe debuted earlier this week, the V6 engine has been dropped from the options list, leaving just the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four and the 5.0-liter V8 with the option of the new 10-speed automatic transmission or the six-speed manual.
As we mentioned when we first saw the coupe, the newly-designed front-end somewhat comes off to us as if Ford was trying just a tad too hard. Yes, it's tight, but it's not particularly beautiful—to most of our eyes, at least. Other than that...well, it's a Mustang. Still rear-wheel-drive, still available with an optional well-powered V8, and you can also get it with the ability to put the roof down, which is cool—even if the front-end is a bit too squinty.
The new 'vert goes on sale in the fall—so yes, your ultimate Pacific Coast Highway rental car should be available relatively soon. Pricing has not yet been announced.
