It appears the next generation of bedroom wall poster cars has begun development. McLaren announced Wednesday that it is working on building a new three-seat hypercar- or as it's being dubbed, a "Hyper-GT"- which will first be delivered to customers in 2019. We are so damn excited. It's like Christmas came early.

This new car – internally codenamed BP23 – will be the most luxurious McLaren ever to leave their facilities. Plush and creature comforts are grand and all, but the harkening back to the best supercar to ever supercar, the McLaren F1, is what's really got our tongues wagging.

“BP23 will borrow the three seat layout with the central driving position made famous by the iconic McLaren F1, and it will be housed in a streamlined, shrink-wrapped carbon fibre body of great elegance," said McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt. Only 106 will be built, just like its Nineties brethren. And before you grab your checkbook or try to get a Kickstarter going with a thousand of your closest friends, all 106 have already been sold, according to the manufacturer.

McLaren wants to be clear that the BP23 is not just a hypercar. The automaker is designing the new three-seater to be useful for road-tripping, while also being a fully-capable sports car.

"We are calling BP23 a ‘Hyper-GT’ because it’s a car designed for longer journeys, but with the high levels of performance and driver engagement expected of any McLaren. A hybrid powertrain will make it one of the most powerful McLarens yet created but the car will also deliver the highest levels of refinement, enabling significant journeys to be undertaken with up to three people aboard," the release said. No info was given of what, specifically, that powerplant would be.

That's all we know for now. But damn. This news almost makes up for McLaren unceremoniously ousting Ron Dennis as CEO yesterday.

Please excuse us now. We're going to print the above image and wallpaper our newsroom with it.
